how the shnarf do i get the bottom of the airbox out so i can drill holes in it? all i see are two rubber stoppers sticking through holes in the sidewall. do i just force these out? is there a trick? is there something that needs to be unscrewed or pried? how is it connected to the front of the vehicle? help a rookie out!

argh. well i'm officially ashamed. i bench almost 500 lbs, but i can't get the airbox out. i have, however, managed to break off the middle of the three slots into which the prongs from the top of the airbox sit.

I used two flat screw drivers wedge in between the two rubber bushings and just pry it (firmly) separately.

well i huffed and i puffed and finally got my airbox out. unfortunately, the plastic that connects to the bushings broke off, and on one side it took a big chunk of plastic out of the side of the airbox as well. i guess thats not too bad, seeing as how i was getting ready to poke holes in it anyway.

only problem is now i have the two metal clamps holding the top and bottom of the airbox together on the engine side, but on the other side i'm down to one male/female connection. should i be worried about the seal between the top and bottom not being strong enough? should i devise a way to keep the two parts more solidly together?

this is why ogres should not be allowed to work on cars!

same thing happened to me when i pulled my air box to install my K&N, but as in my case i didn't need the stock box like you do, not much help but just thought i'd throw my experience in too.

500 lbs, dang

Yeah its a pain to get out the first time. once you know where to pull it comes out fairly easy. its just finding that exact angle to pull thats the problem.

remove the silencer also

silencer???

well its all back together. drilled holes in three of the four sides (left side facing engine intact) plus the bottom. revved it up in the driveway. don't notice much in the way of sound difference, but i'm anxious to see how it affects hp and mpg.

the box is only held in place by two small prongs on the bottom. both the arms with the bushings are toast, so its not held to the sidewall at all.

the flared opening where air was originally drawn from

just cut the whole thing off?

there is the flared opening on the outside of the box. then there is also the section of the same tube that continues into the box itself. should i cut out the interior portion as well?
