How do you disable the automatic locking feature?

I have a '97 Explorer XLT w/ power locks and Ford has seen fit to make the doors lock whenever it is put in drive. However, sometimes this feature doesn't work until I'm half a mile down the road.

I would just like to disable it all together without getting rid of my power and remote lock functions.

Has anybody else done this or heard of a way to do it?

Thanks

i dont think it is possible... however mine will only lock them if the drivers door is closed when i start it... if it is open it wont lock them once i close the doors....

The first thing that came to mind when you said the doors would lock sometime half mile down the road. I believe the auto lock occurs when you take your foot off the brake pedal. Have you checked if the brake pedal switch is sticking? The reason for the delay may be because your brake lights are staying on and once they go off (bump or just gummy), the locks lock.

There is a process to disable the auto-lock feature. The search will give you this process, but I think the symptoms are telling you something. Find that problem and you will not one day find a dead battery in your Explorer due to the brake lights draining it.

Just a thought.

SOmetimes the door will not lock because if your like me and jump in, toss it in drive and let your foot off and shut the door all at once, it won't lock until the next time you brake. sometimes mine doesn;t lock until for a while. i know it's not th ebrake switch on mine anyway...

Pull out the booklet in your glovebox and find the card that tells you the code for the buttons on the side of the doors that unlock them. If you turn it over, it will tell you how to disable it. I can't remember but you have to hold 3 and type in the code or . . . heck I don't know!

no problems with mine, it normally works fine unless i hurry up and do 3 things at once

Thanks all

Thanks to everyone who helped, I'll be going at it after work tonight. And yes, I did a basic search prior to posting, I searched for "locks" and didn't find what I was looking for after 12 pages of topics so I gave up. Stinking search engines are so picky, why the hell don't they just search for what I'm thinking about instead of what I type. :)
