explorer got totaled :(
Hey everybody,
I have been hearing my speakers raddling for a little while now and I have gotten annoyed by it. Some of my friends tell me that I just need to take off my door panel and make sure everything is in place and tighten everything back on there. Should that help my speakers from rattling? There is three screws on the two front doors and just two screws on the two back doors. I take those off and I can't get the door panels off. What am I missing. I try taking them off in all directions but it doesn't seem to want to come off. Thanks for all of your help.

I'm pretty sure that the panels on yours are at least similar to the panels on my 95. They are probably held on by some pretty tough plastic screw like inserts. It takes some pulling to get them to let go. Get yourself a thin prybar and a flashlight. Carefully pry back the door panel a bit along one of its edges and shine the light in there. If you look around the edges of the panel, you'll see where it is attached. Now if you concentrate your pulling at each of the places it is attached, you'll get it to come off.

While you're back there, why not just replace the factory speakers with some high quality aftermarket ones and get rid of the rattling completely??

yeah I think I will replace the speakers with some aftermarket ones, what size are the front and rear door speakers? I read that they are 5x7's but i've also heard 6x9's so I really don't know. Where did you put 4 5x7's and 2 6x9's? Thanks for your help.

All four of the door speakers are 5x7s. I changed all four of my door speakers and I have two 6x9's in individual boxes under the rear seats. I had the 6x9s in my old truck and I wasn't just gonna let them sit, so I threw them under the rear seats of this one. Being on the floor kinda deadens the sound a bit, but they are still loud. Happy to help!!

5x7's? I put 5x8's in mine. According to Crutchfield Ford Explorers have 5x8's.

thanks a lot again man, This has really helped me out quite a bit.

Actually the size is 5x7/6x8. You can fit either one in. The 6x8 are just a larger speaker on the 5x7 mounting plate.

You can also fit a 5.25" speaker with an adapter plate. The plate is the size of a 6x8 speaker, with a hole cut out for the size of a 5.25" speaker. The speaker mounts to the plate and the plate mounts to the factory screw locations. BTW these plates are free if you buy your speakers at Crutchfield. Just tell them when ordering you need this plate for your installation. Otherwise they are $10.
