ive got a '95 explorer with about 200k on the ticker. the truck is in excellent shape overall. ive been thinking of swapping in a supercharged 3.8 from a tbird supercoupe and a 4r70w from the same car. my question is has anyone done this before or something similar. im not looking for a rocket here but i hate the 4.0 ohv and crap auto trans. my one main question is how would the 4x4 work after this swap. i love the fact that i have 2wd, 4auto and 4low, and i would love to keep it that way. im not going to attempt this for quite a while but i was just wanting some input from you guys.

You can just throw on the Advance Adapters AOD to BW1350 adapter on the tbird tranny. Then use your stock tcase and everything would be the same. Getting the 3.8/4r70w in there is going to be the harder part! :D

section, did the 95s use the bw1350?

by then werent they exectronic? and would mean at least teh 1354?

Yeah. They were 4405s. But the adapter was originally made for a 1350 thats what its labeled from AA. But, it'll work with 1350, 1354, 4405, etc.

the 3.8L is basically a 5.0L with two cylinders missing, so you might find it a semi east fit. I know of one person with a SC 3.8L powered Ranger, its a desert truck with no dash, etc...but its fast!

thanks for the input guys. it wont happen for quite a while but i figured it would be more unique than putting a 5.0 in there. so is the transfer case and 4x4 stuff all electronic or vacume operated in the explorer

i plan to get the wiring harness and computer from the supercoupe to run the engine and tranny, but how will i make the 4x4 work.

The 4WD system is pretty independent from the rest of the truck. It uses the GEM and not the computer to operate. You probably don't even have to mess with the GEM/4WD part of the truck during the motor/tranny swap.

ok so the 4x4 has it own control system. thats just what i wanted to hear. the truck is in great shape, not a spec of rust, no cracks in the leather, maybe 1 or2 door dings tops. the problem is the mileage and crappy drivetrain. i would think that it would have considerable more low end with the 3.8 sc engine. i cannot begin to describe how bad i hate the 4.0 ohv engine and a4ld derrived tranny.

has anyone ever heard of a swap like this or even similar to this done to either an explorer or a ranger before. id like to check out a website or read some more about this if anyone has any leads id appreciate it.

3.8L in a Ranger has been done, let me see if I can find the old posts, I think it was on Rangerpowersports.com
the electric shift system just gets a signal from the transmission neautral sensor

is that sensor located on the tranny, because i would most likely be replacing the tranny with an aod or something of that variation.
