just wondering what i should expect out of our explorer engines. mines a 96 with 107,000 and it runs like the day it was made. the tranny on the other hand went 20,000 miles ago. i expected that. but the engines are pretty damn good aren't they?

the 4.0L OHV 60 degree Cologne V6 is a WORKHORSE.

With proper maintenece it will outlast the truck itself.
I have seen them pulled apart with over 200K miles on the engine and no visable wear on the block.

The OHV 4.0L is the last in a long line of Ford pushrod V-6's in the Cologne family.
FIrst the 2.6L, 2.8L, 2.9L and then finally the 4.0L.

in my opinion they are some of the toughest, longest lasting work horse engines ever built.

Pretty close to my stats alphabet...
106K, new tranny at 70K.

There are high mileage explorer threads here with some that have theirs at 400K and still running.

Go Ford.

150k and i have ran the piss out of it since i got it from my dad at 100k. I hit rev-limiter ta least once in each drive and it consumes oil like a brand new motor which is none.

that is good to hear. so anotherwards, get ready to replace the tranny again before the engine ever goes:rolleyes: thank god for the warranty the first time;) thanks guys.

yeah my next tranny problem will be fixed by a c4 if i can't figure out how to bolt up a c5.

130k miles on both engine(ohv) and tranny. Although you could tell they arent's NEW NEW, they're running strong still.

Yea, true, I am not worried so much with my SOHC as I am with my Tranny. How hard is it to bolt up a 700-R4 tranny up in there? :(

You need a trnny to engine adapter then a tranny to tc adapter. If you go wiht a c4 it all just bolts up with minor modifications. Im swapping to 2wd when i go c4 then too

if you have a 2wd, all you need is the AA adaptor and a little driveshaft work (cheap).

it seems as though the OHV 4 liter and the 5 liter share about the same longevity. i have personally seen 5 liters take some crazy abuse and just keep on going. i sold my old mustang with 120k on the odometer. guy bought it and slapped a blower on it running 7psi. it is now 4 years later, and that car is still running with a little over 200k on it. thats after all of my abuse, plus his abuse with the boost.

My truck hit 256K this week.
The 2.9L went to 175K, then I dropped in a 93 OHV 4.0L with about 120K on it, still runs great, HOWEVER I jacked up the block and had to borrow another 4.0L. The 93 OHV I am running now has 170K on it, it has had synthetci since day 1 in 93, it has had the upper and lower intake gaskets repaired, and thats it. It runs like a scolded dog......

A C4 tranny can be made to work with the ohv 4.0L, using some parts from the C5.

see Doug's 4.0Lperformance site for details on this.
Keep in mind the C4 is a 3 speed, no more OD...

I will be using a C4 in my truck, I wont need OD by then anyways.........

The ford auto transmissions are the same way, if you take care of them, change the fluid and filter, and keep an eye on the temp they will last 5 times longer than everyone elses.........

My 1993 Limited with 4.0L OHV has 205,000 highway miles same original engine and tranny and counting miles

76k and going strong(Although its not much to brag about:rolleyes:) But I swear It could run all day @ 4k RPMs

Just turned 111,000 miles today on both the motor and tranny with narry a problem...Hope to keep the X until it has about 200K.

95 with 175,000 - replaced the tranny at 150,000 but like boomin I run the piss outta mine and I still can't believe how well it runs

110,000 miles on orginal motor & tranny.. Haven't notice any problems with the tranny yet. (knock on wood) Then again, I've never towed anything heavy on it, only my Honda 4 wheeler.

You guys posting with alot of miles, saying I havent had problems with the tranny yet, best thing you can do:

CHANGE the tranny fluid and filter at LEAST once a year.
Cheapest insurance you can buy for the auto's.

I change mine probably 3 times a year.

Now keep in mind when you drop the pan and change the fluid you are only getting 1/3 of the ATF thats in there. You can have it flushed at your local quick-e-lube or you can change the fluid 3-4 times in a row to get the fluid to run clean again...

Keeping the tranny from overheating, and keeping fresh ATF and filter in there will make your tranny last 5 times longer than it would if you dont......

The auto tranny's they put in Explorer's are already getting the short end of the stick. They wer not origianlly designed for the weight of the vehicle or the abuse they see in our trucks, so changing the fluid is the single best thing you can do to prolong their life.

Burned ATF does not lubricate and it does not cool. You mine as well be ruinning water in the tranny if your fluid is brown and smells burnt.

I only got 135,000-miles out of my stock engine. The top end was worn out and then the oil pump broke. I replaced it with a remanufactured motor. I think my problem was the oil pump.

180,000 miles on original engine and tranny. Still going strong. Starts, idles, runs, shifts perfect....well maybe not perfect but pretty damn close.

about to roll over 180,000

Got just about 180,00 on mine. Engine runs like a champ.

tranny just scares me to think about it. have about 50,000 on the rebuild now and it seems fine. I just know in the back of my head it is gonna quit on me sometime.

Word is adding another tranny cooler, aux filter and keeping up on fluid changes is the way to go with the A4LD
