How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

ive got 182,000 on my 03 4.6 xlt. think it needs a torque converter due to the noise it makes. shifts great though. may have something to do with being an old jiffy lube company truck.

Have an Eddie B 04 with 30k miles changed the trans fluid at 20k miles just in case - very smooth , no problems at all with the transmission - hope to keep t for a long time

My wifes 02 Mountianeer (4.0V6) has 80,000 miles an NO problems

My 02 Mountianeer (4.6V8) has just under 160,000 miles and works fine. It shift a tad sluggish between 1-2 under acceleration but I dont beat on it. One wierd thing I noticed it kinda chatters when completely stopped then turning? I just put new tires on it maybe thats it? Shifts in and out of OD just fine though

142k and still running strong!!!!

02' Eddie Bauer 4.0L 4x4

142,000 and still going strong!!!!!!

I did have to replace the front diff at 120k though...

my current ex has about 32,000 miles on her, sealed trans no problems here:D

How ever my old 1991 had a major need of service, seal between trans and block leaked like there was no tomorow. I put a full quart of oil a week in that old thing. Thats okay though i took care of it........
It had 165,781 miles on it when i drove it into a pole in a parking lot and pushed the frame back 6 inches:(:thumbdwn:

I've got close to 43,000 miles on the original transmission. It's an '02 xls 2x4. I am the second owner of it. I flushed it and put in a new filter about 3k ago.

160K+ had to replace solenoid block 2 times and adjusted the bands once.

my '03 has little over 140k and it probably has another year left to go :(

Got an 02 with about 135k on it, I bought it at 80k. Had to have the tranny reprogrammed right after I got it, but smooth since. The maint. records show the lady had changed the tranny fluid a couple times while she had it

Approaching 100k miles on mine, no problems to speak of. I'm going to look into the re-flash though. I just don't like that wierd way this tranny shifts, cutting power back until the gearchange is completed. It's just too long and drawn out. If the flash helps quicken and maybe even firm the gearshifts, I'm all for it.
I've been meaning to do it for months now, but I'm going to call my Ford dealer and find out more about it.

If my tranny does eventually fail, no big deal...I'll just toss in a low-mileage used one from the salvage yard and keep on motorin'. I've priced them already, and I can buy one with 30k miles for ~$750. I can do the install myself, so it's not a big deal really.
I can't see spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to have one rebuilt, when there's perfectly good used ones to be had for a fraction of that cost, and most come with a decent warranty, with longer warranties available for purchase if desired. I've met some of the monkeys that work in tranny shops, and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't have them wash my socks, say nothing of having them tear into my transmission. At the dealership, we've had more trouble with rebuilt engines and transmissions than just getting "virgin" low-mile used parts that have never been molested. Rebuilt parts to me just means one more element of human error that wasn't there to begin with. Most the time I'm right too, as the majority of the failures with the rebuilt parts can be pinned down to something that was improperly assembled, or not thouroughly inspected.

Just a few random thoughts is all.

EB Cornburner, thanks for sharing your experience with transmissions. Very helpful.

'02 Mountaineer, 4.0L, 97K. The tranny's been fine, though I have had the tourque converter replaced twice under warranty.

Transmission

03 V8 XLT with tow package. 48,000 mi bought new changed fluid and filter at 35,000. Trans has always worked fine and has never had that delay a lot of posters are complaining about. Maybe because of tow package ( don't know everything included in that other than lower geared differential and maybe bigger cooler). On its third ring and pinion though.

'03 Limited 101,500 miles on original tranny and no maintenance.

02' Eddie Bauer 4.0L 4x4

142,000 and still going strong!!!!!!

I did have to replace the front diff at 120k though...

looks like I spoke too soon....145k now and in the shop being rebuilt :(

48k for me

I have followed every service schedule appointment, and the tranny still went out at 48,000 miles. Had a rebuilt installed in 2005. Just had it in to the dealer to replace the back hatch body panel (stress crack) and have the cruise and radio buttons replaced on the steering wheel. Now, the o/d light has started flashing and "check transmission" on the display. And I'm only at approx. 86k. What a headache!:(

I've posted in this topic before...here's an update...

I now have 118,000 miles on the clock and still going strong. I have noticed that when I'm stopped and I'm next to a wall I can hear the transmission rattling a little bit. This only happens when I'm in drive, when I put it in neutral it stops. The transmission slips every now and then especially when going from reverse to drive.

I drive her kind of hard and she is still very responsive. The dealer recommended that I get my tranny flushed at 100,000 miles and I told him no because I've heard people having problems after that service is done. I've never flushed the tranny since I got my truck two years ago at 32,000 miles.

im @ 62,600 mi right now... my 03 xls has been no less than a CHAMP !! for me

i would like to change the fluids though... idk if or when the last time it was addressed

i dont mean to go a lil off topic - any suggestions for a good qaulity trans fluid ??? thanks...

Danny
