i have a 92 with 4.0 ohv engine and 5 speed transmission. i dont drive my daytona often and it is not currently registered, so i want to tow it to my wife's parent's house so i can work on it (i dont have a garage). i dont know the weight of the daytona, but it cant be too heavy, it's kinda small.

can a 4.0 explorer tow a daytona? or is it too much to ask from the V-6 and mazda 5 speed?

Well Fords Specs are for a 4 door:
4x2 with 3.27 gears, 2000 lbs. Max with 3.73 gears, 2900 lbs. For 4x4 with 3.27 gears, 2000 lbs, with 3.73 gears: 2,700 lbs. I took these straight from my 94 brochure that we used to analyze the options we could get on our explorer. They seem low and I'm sure someone is going to tell me differently, but the figures are from Ford. If you had an automatic with 3.73 gears like me, you could tow 5,200 lbs.

It should tow the daytona w/ no problems if you have a class III Hitch. We used to tow a 4000lb rv with my '92 sport with a 5speed for short distances. Gotta be careful with the clutch though. According to my manual a'92 Sport with manual tranny, w/3.27's or 3.55's, you can tow up to 2000 lbs, w/3.73's you can tow up to 4000 lbs.

BTW, my sport had 3.27's and it did fine.

yup you should be fine towing that daytona
