How To Change Brake Pads on a 96

Hi all , I am new to this forum. I have a 96 explorer eddie bauer 4x4. The brake pads are just about worn all the way down and need to be replaced. I have replaced clutches and transmissions before. However this is the first time I have ever had to do brake pads. I'm sure this ? has been asked before but I coulcnt find what I was looking for when I did a search. So I was just wondering what the procedure is to replacing pads? Any help and or pictures is much appreciated!

I sugest getting either a Hayes or Chilton manual. I'm sure there is alot more information useful to you in them than just the brakes chapter.

Thanks for that link! Alot of good information, are the brakes the same on 92 and 96's? About how long should it take me to change the pads? and how do I know if the rotors are bad? I didnt notice any vibrations or soft pedal or anything. They pads are just getting really low and can almost hear metal to metal. Thanks again, any more comments or tips are greatly appreciated!

No, the brakes are not the same, changing the brake pads on a first gen is more difficult than in the second gen........I know that for a fact, my first X was a 92 and took my brother over an hour to change the pads, when he changed my pads on my 98, it took about 20 minutes per side.


Getting a Haynes manual will help, I have one I keep in my X

If you are doing the rear brakes as well, don't forget about the parking brake pads.
