How tough is replacing the a/c clutch on my 1999 Explorer with a 302? Is it worth trying myself or should I just take it in to the dealer?

I'd like to do it myself if its not too time consuming since I am a tight wad, but for this to be practical I would have to change it under the hood since I do not have the refrigerant tools needed to remove the compressor. Is this practical? Will I need some specialized tools and pullers to do it in those tight quarters?

I believe the clutch bearing is shot, since the clutch plate can easily be wiggled about .060 inches with slight hand pressure. The ac was working great, then just started blowing hot vs cold air. I gues this is when the bearing let loose. I have checked the voltage to the clutch and it is good.

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Doug Danielson
