my 92 EX has 100,000 mi on it. and when im on the highway at 55-65 mph the tach is at 3 grand. i shifted it into drive without o/d and nothing happened. i had a 90 ranger with a 5 spd 2.9 that turned 3 grand at 55- 65 in 5th gear., but i dont think thats right for this thing. i did a search and from what ive read most guys seem to be doing 2500 rpms at highway speeds. i also did the throttle cable mod could that be affecting it? the cable didnt have a lot of slack in it i just did it cause i didnt like the feel of pushing the pedal almost to the floor it seemed it get moving.

OK
This is a long shot-
Maybe the torque converter is not locking
try disconnecting the battery for a while, about 5 minutes, then go for a spin to see if it made a difference

Does the od light flash??
Check engine light on?

'92 doesn't have an OD light to flash. If the CEL is on, though, definitely start by pulling codes. As there are many cases with EEC-IV where there may be trouble codes present even if the CEL isn't on, that's probably the best place to start whether the CEL is on or not. If you're up to doing it yourself, you might review my notes on pulling EEC-IV codes in the EEC-IV forum. I know I have described elsewhere here details about testing the 3-4 shift circuit. If there's a problem with 4th gear on these, I like to determine if the problem is in the electronic controls or not first.

Of course, knowing for sure that it isn't shifting into 4th gear (or if the torque converter isn't locking up or both) would be useful (don't want to chase a problem that doesn't exist). This
i shifted it into drive without o/d and nothing happened.
suggests that, at the time of this test, it wasn't in 4th gear. If we can assume that you performed the test at a time when it should have been in 4th gear (cruising on level ground above ~40-45 mph), then something appears to be wrong.

Let us know what you find.

A Question please

In my 94 Limited im turning 3K at interstate speeds 75 to 80 mph is this right ??

It still looks strange having the speedometer almost pegged at 85MPH when driving on the interstate.....what was Ford thinking ???

Dwight

theres no CEL on. i was on the highway doing about 60 when i tried shifting.
i think i read that post bout the 3-4 thing ill have to look it up again.

A lack of lockup will usually add about 300 RPM at 60MPH from my experience. A lack of 4th gear will add at least twice that. When I hear 3K at 60-65 I am hearing NO 4th gear.

In the A4LD there are reasons for a lack of 4th gear, starting with a plugged solenoid screen, or bad solenoid.... and going from there. That is a common one and one youcan check with the tranny in the vehicle... along with some electricals.

i dont have a service manual are the electrical connections i need to check at the trans? is there a sticky with pics that i can look at?

I've found the wiring diagrams in Chiltons adequate for diagnosing the 3-4 shift circuit. It's not a complex circuit. As for physical location, the connector is on the driver's side of the trans. There's also a connector on the driver's side fender under the hood that might be more convenient. I've been known to backprobe the connectors at the comptuer's 60 pin connector, too. Plenty of options.

OK My question again

If i am at 70 MPH on level interstate what should my RPM be at ??

Thanks
Dwight

do i need to probe this connector while the engine is running? trans in park? what kind of voltage should i be looking for?

i checked the 20A maxi fuse under the hood for elec shift and it wasnt blown. can someone tell me which connector on the drivers side i need to probe? i jacked up the explorer to look at it at the trans but i couldnt get to it and its 40 degrees outside not a fun time to be laying on the ground.

i just took it to autozone to check for codes and its clear. i called a local trans place and the guy told me 1700 bucks to rebuild the trans. i only paid 700 for the vehicle so id rather fix it if i can or do without O/D.

this might not be related to my problem, but theres a big gray connector with quite a few wires going into it on the drivers side inner fender it looks like it goes down underneath the explorer. well theres a cut brown wire on one side of the connector. its not just cut theres a section of it missing. does anyone know what this wire might be for? i dont want to repair it than have something else go wrong. my cruise control doesnt work either could it possibly be for that?

i repaired that wire and it didnt do anything.

Pdwight - you will be looking at around 2300 RPM, give or take.

92EBexplorer - I am thinking you may need to drop the pan and check the 3-4 shift solenoid. If you have a FORD dealer they could hook up the Rotunda transmission tester and check the soplenoid externalls, but would charge you to do so. Given the value, it might be easier to just drop the pan and check it. You might want to read the A4LD Valve Body rebuild diary too. (It is in the stickies at the top of the first page.)

Thanks Glacier

Then I am about right, like I said at 80 MPH I am right at or just under 3K on the interstate....good to know....still wish my Spedo didn't just go to 85mph.

Dwight

I am currently having the same problem. I have determined that the issue lies in the tranny. It could be the screen, a sticky solinoid, a bad servo or the drum the band goes around. I have done all of the electrical checks. I has 28 ohms continuity on the solinoids. I have a signal going to the solinoids just no shift to 4th.

i took it to a trans shop today and they told me 4th is nonexistant (which i already knew) and 3rd is slipping. plus i found out today that the 4wd doesnt work. ive only had the thing for 3 or 4 weeks and now looks like im going to sell it. im trying to buy a house i cant afford a couple grand to fix this thing.
thanks for everyones help.

Wow, at 55-65 im at 2 grand even.. But i have the 5R55E 5 speed auto attached to a 4.0 SOHC.

i found a 94 tranny for 350.00 i talked the guy down 100 bucks, because he was selling the transfer case too which i dont need. so it looks like ill be holding on to the EX for a little while longer.
