so my 1354 manual transfer case is going out on me. i bought it used it lasted about 10 mo. so the $$$ i paid for it was way too much considering it didn't last hardly any time. i knew i wasn't going to buy used again. so i was going to get it rebuilt... but i'd be out of my truck till it was done which i jus can't do. hell i jus got done with the dana 44 swap i can't take it out of commision again. so i figure i'd buy a rebuilt transfer case and baby this one till i get it. i found a couple places with good warranty's but wanted nearly $1000 for a transfer case  ya right. anyways i finally found a place that had them for $590 shipped including shipping to send my old one back. best i'd found... more than i really wanted to spend but much better than the other places i found. so whatever i bought it. then i got to thinking maybe this rebuild only has the one bad piece replaced with all the other parts being original... so i was kinda worried about that but it comes with a 1 yr unlimited mileage warranty. still not sure if i did the right thing i decided to try it anyways. yesterday they call me and tell me they found me a transfer case. a rebuilt transfer case that would be an extra $100 on top of what i already paid. that wasn't going to work. then they said they have a brand spankin new one they will give me for the price i already paid but it has a problem. the wieght thats mounted to the back and is held on by 4 bolts... well one of the areas where the bolt goes in was broke off. so only three bolts would hold it on. they assured me that was all that was wrong with it and it still had the warranty and it was brand new. so i got the new one for what i think is a good price for a new one. $530 including shipping. and an extra $60 to send my old one back. sound good to ya'll? cuz it sure sounded good to me. almost too good though... especially since they were going to charge me an extra hundred dollars more for a rebuilt one rather than a brand new one.

IMO thats still alot of $$$$. :)

But the manuals are harder to find.
I would go used for less then half of that, chances are the next one will hold up.

Or better yet rebuild it yourself.

ya i see everyone talk about how cheap they get there parts for and i can look all over and over and over and not even come close to what they say they paid. if u think thats too much u don't even want to know what i paid for my crappy used one. i'm practically ashamed... and it was still the cheapest used one i could find!

Hey I spent $700 for my disc braked 8.8 and I spent $1200 for my leather seats.

I have learned alot since then.

Alot of it has to do with availability in your area of course.
the manual BW is of course harder to find, and $560 is not too much for a new/rebuilt unit, of course not (in fact its cheap as you can get!), but it is alot of $$$, thats all I meant.

new chain is less then 50 bucks...

new chain, bearings and seals would probably run you just under a hundred bucks...

Get a used one for 200-300, and rebuild this one. so incase the used one goes, you got a rebuild sitting in a box ready to go. All in all you would have spent half the price for 2 transfercases :D

Creager, did you read the rest of his post? He said that he ended up with a BRAND NEW t-case. ;) It would be nice to buy the parts, rebuild it, and sell it on here or locally. As a matter of fact, SVO might buy it from you. He was going to get Doug's 1354 when he went w/ an Atlas, but Doug hasn't installed the Atlas yet and is going to be out of the country pretty soon. Just an idea. Anyways, it would be nice to learn how to rebuild it and you can make a couple hundred bucks more than the rebuild parts will cost.

ahh i thought he said they didnt ship it after all. oops

Yeah I misunderstood too...

I think from now on as I read posts I am going to take notes.

well how hard is it to rebuild one? if i don't send it back i get charged $150 for the core... but $60 of it would be spent anyways shipping it back then i'd have to buy the rebuild kit which would be around what $100 or something i dunno i didn't look into it. how time consuming would it be? time is something i don't have alot of right now. some have told me keep it and rebuild it cuz its easy... but most of these people also tell me its easy to setup gears  i obviously can't setup gears either. the rest have told me don't bother its way too hard. so i dunno what to do. how much could i even get for it if i rebuilt it? it'd be nice to make a lil extra change... or hell to even have a spare but i just don't know if it would be more trouble than its worth.

im not sure if its any harder then doing gears, as far as alighning things perfectly. It does have 100x more parts... it probably wouldnt be that difficult, but you would end up spending a month or two until you figure out how it all goes back togeather. haha

The ranger station has an exploded view of it. TONS of parts, looks like a manual tranny in the inside haha. But you only have to replace like 5 of them, so im sure its not difficult, just time consuming and tedious.

search, I remember an old thread with pictures.

last week i got my BRAND NEW transfer case in... its wrong :thumbdwn: so no more new transfer case. i'm still waiting on a replacement... they have 2 day shipping  supposedly sent it out last wednesday. i might or might not get it tomorrow. my badly worn transfer case is just about gone. it bucks like its kicking in and out of gear or something... its making funky noises... i really need my new one. my inspection is up but i wouldn't trust someone to drive it. my transfer case goes and i lose my core charge. i couldn't even go offroading! it rained good and it would've been a blast but no can do. so now i'm stuck waiting. and what i thought was a good thing... a lucky thing... turns out to be nothing more than a big hassle and a pain in my ass :fire:

1st they send the wrong transfercase... it happens... then they take forever to send my replacement... what can u do. then i get the new one spend my time and money putting it in my truck and its a garbage transfer case jus like the one i'm replacing!!! :fire: now i'm pissed! i jus replaced my old worn transfer case with another old worn out transfer case! i wasted all that time to put in a slightly better conditioned case in. with all the symptoms my old case had jus not as severe yet... meaning i will yet again have to swap cases. i'm pretty much digusted with these people :thumbdwn:

Wow, that sucks. Sorry to hear about that man. Who are you getting them from? I want to know so I NEVER have to deal with them.

P.S. I have a plan to fix your problem...Atlas. :p

"Transfer Case Express" thats the company i've been dealing with. (edit) they did there job correctly aside from sending the wrong transfer case at first. jus a misunderstanding on my part. i was misinformed. they have good customer service and are good people to deal with, so while i was angry at them it was a mistake and i guess i would reccomend them. and an atlas would great but if i had the money for that i'd have already put it in. right along with my v8, dana 60's and 38's :D

ok so i finally talked to someone at transfer case express today. they don't know for sure but don't see how the transfer case can be at fault. he said its got to be the transmission... (maybe it is, i don't know) the mechanics i talked to all said transfer case. he said the output shaft going bad or something along those lines. does that sound likely? i don't even have 110,000 mi on my truck. and i've always heard how these tranny's hold up pretty decent. when its in gear and i let off the gas theres a loud whrrrrrr.... whrrrrr... whrrrrrrrrr... u can feel it and hear it. but not in the tranny shifter. u can jus feel it doing that. what does that sound like to ya'll? tranny..? transfer case...? something else maybe?

nevermind... looks like i got it figured out  not the transmission :D man i'm soo glad. not the transfer case... which means these guys wouldn't be bad to deal with. there customer service is good and since the transfer case isn't at fault thats even more of a plus. my bad on jumping to conclusions... its jus the mechanics i talked to said transfer case... transfer case... transfer case... anyways i did indeed need a transfer case as mine was worn and starting to act up pretty bad. its just 1/2 of my problem was something else all together. called a transmission/ transfer case specialist that my dad knows real good. told them my problem and told me doesn't sound like a tranny or transfer case problem. it sounds like my pinion is loose on the rear end. sure enough it is... whether the bearing is going bad or the nut is backing off it is loose. i got my fingers crossed thats all it is cuz thats not a big deal to fix nor is it an expensive fix.
