I have a transfer case problem on my 98 Explorer.

Hi I have a 98 Explorer,

The Transcase needs work as there is quite a noise in the front drive train even while in 4WD Auto. I am getting this repaired in a week or so.

I the mean time I would like to put the car in 2WD to take load of the front.

I have heard about the brown wire mod to disable power to the transcase to put the car in 2wd, would pulling the cable out of the transcase motor or removing the transcase relay do the same thing ?

You can just take off fuse #6 (20A). This will disable power on TCase.

If I remove this fuse, will it have an impact on anything else besides the transcase ? e.g. the GEM ?

Only the TCase. In fact, the Transfer Case Relay.

BTW, notice that you'll be running in 2wd but all the front drivetrain components must still rotate.
