i need a new muffler ....where/what/how ?

i have a hole in the muffler. do i need to change the whole exhoust system or just the main thing ?

look up yellow pages under automobile, and exhaust shops.

You can choose any muffler brand you want.

You can do it yourself if you can weld.

A muffler replacement should cost about $80-150 at a shop

You've got one of the bas-tard systems that NOBODY makes a replacement system for. The '98 Sport used a dual inlet, single outlet muffler, with one flanged inlet and one clamped inlet. As of 6 months ago, nobody made a kit that was a direct replacement for it.

You can replace just the muffler as long as the rest of the pipes are in good shape. Any halfway competent exhaust shop should be able to provide you with an OEM replacement, but they're pricey!! (To the tune of $300+ plus labor)

I ended up replacing mine with a Flowmaster 50 series performance/SUV muffler. The dual in, single out was almost a direct fit (the brackets on the header needed to be cut to bring the inlets closer together) and the local exhaust shop installed it for $50.

The 542553 is what I have (I think).... dual 2 1/4 in, single 3" out. I had them adapt the outlet back down to the stock tailpipe. I've heard that reducing the backpressure by going up in tailpipe size on the SOHC reduces low-end torque. I also kept the stock resonator.... I've heard that without it, that muffler tends to drone. Mine only has a little bit of drone right around 80 mph (and it's nothing compared to the holey OEM one before I changed it!!) Everyplace else in the RPM range, it's very quiet at cruising speeds, and has a nice bit of growl on acceleration.

I've also noticed that it's gotten quieter at every speed except 80 mph.... could just be age. (It's been on there for about 18,000 miles and 6 months now.)

Offhand, no.... I never measured mine.... I just took the muffler to the local performance exhaust shop and asked them to do the install. They made an adapter for the outlet and crimped a mounting flange into one inlet, as well as stretching the slip-fit side to fit. If I remember correctly, the inlets were very close to the OEM size to start with.

Oh, and for what it's worth, they charged me $50 for the install and did it in under an hour.
