I have just gotten a used 1993 explorer. I knew it had problems. I got it from someone I know. But here is what is wrong. When you crank it or sitting still idling it goes dead. When it doesnt go dead the lights go real light and you cant see anything. Anyone else have this problem? I need to get it fixed. I have two small kids who ride in this with me and I cant get ran over at a light cause its dead. Please help!!

...My first thought would be to pull your alternator and battery and have them bench tested for free somewhere like Autozone...This will tell you if not only your alternator is bad, but also if your battery has suffered damage from it...

...You may also be due for new positive and negative cables...;)

Thanks, I know were going to put new cables and ends on this weekend along with new spark plugs.. Just trying to see where else to look. It has 133k miles on it. Not bad for 93.. But thank you!

...Save yourself some head aches and do not attempt to put ends on cables, but instead, replace the whole cable...The cables commonly corrode inside the sheathing....;

...I had to just verify with napaonline.com since the 91 and 94 X are similar but different..;)

Positive cable Item#: CBL717993

...Negative cable Item#: CBL717991

Note: there is a problem on the wording of the negative cable on that link (it says positive)...Those are the exact items for my 91 and they show for the 94 also, so it's good info..After searching for mine, those were the BEST cables I have found to date..:biggthump

weak battery or alternator
could also be the wqiring from alternator to battery
new cables would fix that
bench test the alternator, it should produce 14.4V constant at 800+ RPM

welcome

Yes, Alternator, Battery and new cables.

When you go to do the plugs, do the passenger side through the wheel well. Much easier.

Dang, seems like some y2k stuff is happening to battery cables this month. This is like the 4th thread I've seen where cable have been or might be a major issue, hah. Sorry guys.. I was the first this month, I started it..
