I ordered a set of tires for my truck today from Tirerack...I have been buying tires from them since the early 80's and never have had any issues with them...

Until today...

Seems the wonderful fit verifier had to call to confirm that I wanted the 235-70-16's for an Explorer...And I even emailed him a picture of the door sticker showing the approved tire size from Ford...Base was 235-75-15 and optional was 235-70-16...

Asshat proceeds to call me 4 different times to tell me that due to pending litigation on Explorer rollovers that they can only sell the 15 inch tires to me since that was the only size they show on the truck...

I told this guy that if they wouldn't sell the tires I wanted that I would never order from them again and I would look into litigation of my own against them for fraud...Then I had a brainstorm...Asked asshat if I could put the tires on an 09 Ford Escape...

Guess what...Tires are on the way to me for delivery tomorrow...

This bias against this vehicle is really starting to piss me off...I tried to rent a tow dolly this weekend from U-Haul[I know, I know...] to go pick up a free 97 XLT V8 in Houston and had to rent one of their trucks if I wanted to rent the thing...Thanks to the stupidity of a few moronic drivers we all get to suffer this kind of crap...

Behind you 100% on this one; I had to tell them my 33x12.50's were for a Jeep with a V-DOT approved lift kit on it.

Though THAT case is a little more extreme, they would only sell the P235's to me, wouldn't so much as go one size up much less a 31" when I was stock.

I'm lucky I've got a mate who run's a tyre and suspension shop. He know's that I'll take responsibility for my action's, not run off to some lawyer and sue him if he put's bigger than recommended boot's on my truck. F*****' sick of this global, over protective, treat us like babies, bulls*** attitude.

I now have a Mountaineer....and wouldn't you know that Uhaul doesn't have an issue renting to a Mountaineer, or Navajo....But an Explorer...that's not gonna happen!

I wonder if TireRack has the same issue...

I'm gonna go check right now...

[EDIT]

Yep...I check TireRack, and I checked the info on a 1998 Explorer Limited vs. 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

The Explorer ONLY gives you the 235/70-15's that the Explorers had since day 1. Although I believe the Limited's in 1998 had 16" wheels.
The Mountaineer gives you the standard 235/70-15, and it lists a 255/70-16 optional equipment tire.

I've boycotted tire rack for years & anyone I know I have asked to not buy from them. They pull this BS with many cars too.

Here's some more corporate BS. I went to a tire chain near me. I have gone there for years. They refused to mount my used spare tire onto my spare rim to mount under the X. They said it was a liability thing.
Yet they will unmount a tire from a rim that needs to be repaired & then patch it from inside the tire & then mount the tire back onto the rim. I fail to see how this is any different?

Support your local 'Mom and Pops' tire shop and you won't have all the corporate bs.

or leave your truck sitting on jackstands, just bring them the wheels, and tell them its for a jeep...

My only problem with most local shops...

Is that they overcharge for the same product...Obviously the tire rack can buy in bigger volume thus lower prices but even the local shops are getting the Explorer legality crap line down to a science...Plus I paid $90/each for tires that are locally over $130/ea...

I got my tires and then went to a local shop for the mount and balance...First the "if you didn't buy them here it will cost $15 more/wheel to change them...Plus it is an Explorer so you have to use the stock tire listed in our books not what is on the door sticker"...Local shop #1 down...

Local shop #2...We don't touch Explorers since they roll over so much...#2 down...

Got tired of f*&^ing around...Went to Walmart...Mounting was $5/wheel, lifetime balnce/rotation was $7.50/wheel...And 30 mins later I was out and on my way....

No bs, no whining, no "we don't do Explorer" crap...And Youngbloods' tire in north Austin can kiss my tailpipe...

What a pain is the arse that is... We don't seem to have that problem up here in Canada (and I hope we never do.)

Every tire shop I've looked at online has no probs putting larger tires on... unless the rub, then they won't install them.
Even at Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire) the 16" option is available from 1991+.

Like you said, a few asshats ruin it for everyone else

Canadian Tire will put just about any tire on any rim if you take them in loose,,

you should have seen them when i took my 96 with all the lift ,coilovers, and 35's in for an alignment, but they did it,,

The local tire shop I use has prices similar to Walmart, cheaper than buying online once you include shipping.

They installed 33's on my '92 Explorer with only 2" suspension lift. He said 'You know these are going to rub'. I said yeah, I'll make them fit when I get home. He said OK.

I ran into similar problems last year when was looking for new tires for my 1995. I was buying the stock size tire, but was looking for an LT rated tire. I had several different chain shops refuse to sell me anything but P rated tires. I actually had one of the shops tell me "if you put LT tires on an explorer it will roll over". I ended up going to a small independant shop. They had no problem installing what I wanted and they actually matched the prices of the chain shops.

im glad i read this before i try to order tires. the ones i want seem to only be at tire rack. but i wasn't looking too terribly hard. so i now own a 97 mountaineer AWD . XD

You got lucky on the wally world trip. I took over a set of 30x9.5r15s yesterday for my 98. After waiting around 45 minutes had a manager come explain to me that they were prohibited from putting them on my truck by their computer. Explorers are door sticker only per their regs, or so he said.

I cant fault the workers, the kids are just doing what the company tells them. But someone could have bothered to tell me when I first arrived instead of having me wait!

Drove over and had a local speed shop install today for twice the price.

My Coats 20-20 has never given me any crap about Explorers! If it does, I just cut it's air off for a few minutes and then it sees things MY way!:D:D

But you're right, this Explorer-fear has got to go away someday!

As long as the explorer exists, most people will remember it as the roll over prone "exploder"... Thats why its just easier to say you have a mountaineer, whose gonna know the difference?

I wonder how long it'll be until 5th gen owners start getting crap for the nameplate on their crossover...

I must be a little mellow, and I don't own an Explorer. However, I have a philosophy that any company (regardless of what they sell) that doesn't want my business, then @@@@ them. It isn't worth it to get all caught up and raising my blood pressure. What I don't get is that years after this Firestone/Ford mess that there is still an issue. It was a generation two issue, and now the Ford Explorer is on generation five.

I went to order 265/75-16 for my x and it popped up saying I was changing size andoad rating thus affecting ride quality are you sure....
Came with 235/70-16
No issues though I didn't actually order them and ill be dammned if u-haul tells me I can't tow a "00 miata" with my tow package equipped x... Just always say your towing like a miata or a bug... Then they can't say your overloaded...
I wonder how long it'll be until 5th gen owners start getting crap for the nameplate on their crossover...
Priceless they look exactly like edge... Looks like they took an edge said let's add 4x4 and voila...
