A leak had developed @ my windshield (crappy replacement window installation) and stained my headliner. I have removed the headliner and would like to know what cleaning products I should try. I used some Bissel Fabric cleaner, it worked a little, but it states on the can it is only for mild staining.. If I can't get the stain out can the headliner be recovered?

I have removed some pretty nasty stains with Oxi Clean from Wal Mart. Got a big bucket for $7 or $8 and I can mix it for what ever strength I an de-staining.

Yes you can get it recovered, I called around here and to have them pull it, recover it, and reinstall it was $100.

Save yourself the pain of cleaning it, have it recovered. ;)

I agree with SVO on this, have it redone and save yourself allot of time and trouble. Plus no matter how hard you clean it, you may get a smell from the cleaners or something or a smell that is already there from mildew. You will be impressed at how nice they will make it look by having it redone. Now that you already have it pulled, they may do it allot cheaper for ya. The only thing they don't like to do is to recover the sunvisors. The headliner may not match the visors, but not many do anyways after a few years of the sun.

Thanks for the replies and great info. What kinds of places did you call to have it re-lined? I ignored the directions on the Bissel stuff and soaked the fabric and mildly scrubbed it. The Staining is now about 90-95% gone and it doesn't smell anymore! I'm planning to clean it the best I can over the next few days to get it as clean and odor free as possible. The best case scenario is it comes out ok and I can re-install. Worst case is the staining shows and I have my clean smelling headliner recovered.

Update.. My headliner cleaned up fairly well (98% clean I'd say).. I want to thank nak4af for the Oxiclean tip. After I used the mild bissel carpet cleaner spray (can stuff) it looked great until it dried and the water stains showed up again (fainter, but back again). I then got the oxiclean stuff and mixed it up and sprayed it on. After a few minutes I used a white towel to blot the areas and the towel turned TAN from all the stuff it lifted out. I will post some pics after everything is done.. I am removing the windshield and fixing rust damage around it's channel this weekend. After which I will post new pics...

Thanks again for all the info. Here are pics of the headliner cleaned and re-installed. The cause of my headliner damage/dirt can be seen in my Leaky Windshield Repair thread. It shows the damage and the steps to repair it.

Damn, John... looks brand new! :p

off-topic... did you ever find those rear skyjacker thing-a-majigs you were looking for?

Thanks Tim... The oxyclean stuff really surprised me. It beats having to recover the headliner.. I'm still waiting on my rear leaf springs. Most spring companies don't stock them, but they will custom make them in 3+weeks.. I ordered them at the end of Sept and Carrier Spring shipped them out last Wednesday.. They should arrive by the weekend. :)
