ok well, i cant decide what hight i want my truck. i have decided i dont really want to lower it alot. if i do its only like 1 1/2". im trying to decide between that or lifting it. i know absolutly nothing about lifting. i wa hopeing you guys could tell me whats involved in it. how much it costs what the labor is and what not. my truck is a 4x4 but i never really go offroading. i would like to start going if i do lift my ruck but i dont really know where to go around here.
and my other question is when you lift is how much does it slow down your truck and how much more top heavy is it?

in terms of being more uncontrollable if lifted..not really...as long as you dont drive it like a miata... youll need to do torsion twist... and blocks..for either lowering or lifting..... here is a good point to think about: Do you care if the body gets screwed up and the paint scratched or gouged? if yes and you want to make the body shiny drop it for a street truck... if you dont care raise it up....

yeh thats true. i do care if the paint is all scratched and dinged and what not. i wasthinking of maybe just a 2" lift. not for off roading but more or leff for looks.
but on the otherhand ive never really been 4x4ing. if i had alot of fun doing it i might not care about the paint.
but if i was going to go offroading in it i would want to raise it up alot more then 2 inches.
how much does it cost to raise it say 4-5 inches?

After I did my 2" lift with the torsion twist and shackles and with the new tires, the truck actually handles better than at stock height with the stock Goodyears. Then I put on the Saleen swaybars and now the truck handles really well. In very quick manuevers, it is still vulnerable to tipping, as all SUVs are, but on semi-gradual and/or banked turns, it handles as well as my dad's SLK.

As James said, if you take your truck offroad, you run the risk of mechanical and body damage. My truck made it through Moab this May with only a few scratches, but many members have had serious damage on the trail.

i am/was stock hieght with 31s and went to los coyotes with some of this site's big dawgs... my pinch welds are crunched under the truck and my doors in the rocker panel area are dented and i have a lot of tree scratches.....

... but how much do you guys think it would cost to lift this thing?

same as to lower it... not including tires.... to lower anything after a 994 or to lift for that matter it would cost under $100 bones + an alignment and tires/rims

... to lift it like 4 inches is only 100 bucks?

i dont think you can lift it like 4" not on anything after 94... i was talking about a torsoin twist 1-2" for the front and shackles for rear lift or blocks for drop..... if you want more than that you are looking at a bl for under $100.... 4" of lift for less than $200....not sure about dropping

some one's gonna hate this but........

Y not lift it + get some shiney rims and stuff and dont take it off road,
I think the newer (95 + explorers) look VERY sharp with a small lift and the tires sticking 1" out of the fenders,
Kind of a pre-runner/rally thing just add a roof rack and some lights and you got a hot looking exploder!!:D

originally i wanted to keep mine stock height, just with bigger rims and lo-pros. but now that i went offroading with my friend in his jeep..... i want to do a little lift. not a lot (cause i dont want any handling problems), but enough to clear some of the rocks on the trails around here.

yeh i dunno i was thinking maybe lift it like 2 inches and put some big tires on there and grille guard etc... it would look bad ass, but i might not go 4x4ing in it. and i dont really want to get made fun of for it either =)

i hate lifted pavement trucks!!!!!

pavement trucks need to go 4x4ing

see people like you keep me from doing that!

if it was going to be just pavement i wouldnt lift it too much maybe just 2 inches with 31's.
i plan on a grillguard and some more aux. lights anyway. not on a huge roof rack but just 2 sitting on the grille guard

toss 31s on stock and you can still tell people you got 31s.....31s on jeeps are big so people here that on a stock X and are like HOLY SHNIKE!!!!

yeh but i just bought new tires so if i do lift it etc... its not going to be until these ones wear out

What I would suggest would be to go do just a little light 4wheeling, see if you like it. Take your swaybars off maybe, so you can get a feel for what you can do. Then, if you like it a lot, lift that puppy. I've heard that you can adapt the Trailmaster 4" 98-01 lift to fit '95-97, but I don't know how hard that is or if it's really worth the effort or cost. To get 4-5 inches, do a 2" Torsion twist and slap on a 2 or 3 inch body lift. I love the way a second-generation sport looks with a little lift and some tires. :smoke:

how do you do a torsion twist?

Do a search for torsion bars or torsion twist or whatever; there have been tons of threads about it. I think there's also a write-up on it if you go to the tips section of explorer4x4.com. Good luck with your plans, whatever you do with your truck :smoke:
