OK so far it's been like clockwork and it's really pissing me off.

On my way home from work in the same general location my idle jumps to 1200 in D. If I shift it N I get about 1500rpms. Then, it stops shifting correctly. It will shift thru all the gears by about 20mph. Then it starts to overheat and when it gets just about to the red line the a/c shuts off. Lucky for me, at this point I have to get on the highway and the temp falls to normal. When I get off the highway it still idles high, shifts horribly and overheats again. It will even react as if it is running out of gas. I have disconnected the battery three times and left it overnight. In the morning before I goto work I begin the reprogramming cycle by letting it warm up at idle, run a/c for a few minutes at idle and then drive about 20 miles to work. After that it runs fine. As soon as I head home it starts the same **** at the same location. Someone shoot me!!!

All this started after I had my a/c fixed which had not been worrking for a year or so.

I'm about to take a sledge to this thing.

Any help would be appreciated and thank you for your time.

Matt

Man that sucks!! Take it back to the A/C place and tell them what is happening.

Its a 2001 it should still be under warranty right? Take it back to ford and have them hook it up to their diagnostic computer.

I wonder if some hoses are not correctly connected and is throwing the cpu outa wack.

Any lights going on in the dashboard?

After all that I wrote I am probably no real help to ya, but offer my condolences.:p

Good luck with that.

Brian

Personally I don't think recharging the a/c would have this effect on it. My 2001 is almost 2.5 yrs old and about 48k on the ticker...no warranty there.

I am cleaning the MAS tonight and maybe that will help.

Oh, I didn't know you just had it recharged. Mine needs a recharge, but maybe I won't do it now.

Does it run fine w/o the A/C on, cuz doesn't the cpu make some adjustments to air/fuel mixture?

Yeah try cleaning the MAF. Alot of people have had success with that.

Let us know what the issue is.

Brian

Cleaned the MAS and running fine now. I'll keep my finger's crossed. As for the CPU and a/c, yes it set a fuel mixture at the beginning when it learns it's different idle trims. In the manual part of the sequence includes running the a/c for at least a minute.

We'll see how it goes.

Is it possible that your electric fan is acting up?? Maybe the thermostat in it isn't working right, or the wiring is damaged. Just a thought...

You know, I am thinking that might have something to do with it. It runs at 180 deg, which is most of the time. It is also wired to turn on when the A/C goes on so I know it goes on. My thinking is that it is just not cooling enough. We've had 100 deg weather here so that may be a problem. I am going to look into rewiring the fan for twice the output.

On the way to dinner it happened again, but when I started it after dinner and it ran fine. I think it is over heating and the ECU is trying to raise the rpm's to cool the motor thinking the stock fan is there.

I'll keep you posted.

are you out of warranty already?

Well, it did it again on the way home from work. This time just the idle was high. Ran at normal temps. Still no idea what's up.

The weird shifting is caused by the overheating. The high idle is from the engine trying to cool itself down. (revs up to turn fan and water pump faster) I think it happening after the A/C charge is because since you are now using the A/C it is creating a lot of extra underhood heat.

Almost 50K... about time to flush the cooling system and install a new t-stat anyways.

edit: When mine overheated a few weeks ago, it did the exact same yours is doing. Didn't overheat on the highway (air flow must have been sufficient for cooling), but did overheat on short, in town trips. The idle stayed high each time I restarted the engine, even if it had not began to overheat yet. (I guess the computer 'learned' it or something) A new thermostat and flushing the system solved the problems.

doh.. i can't read!

Cool at least I know what is causing this.

Did that last year, but didn't replace the stat.

If I let it cool for about an hour, it starts up and runs at normal idle. Through trial and error I found that resetting the ECU didn't change anything.

I think my a/c may be low on oil and could be causing the compressor to work hard.
