My explorer was hit while it was parked and it rolled at least 50 yards.

I have heard rumors of a transmission "paw" that is supossed to give in these situations..Has anyone heard any such rumors, do you know how the tranmission would have given and allowed the car to roll like this? thanks for any help!!

If you have an auto tranny, there is a part called a "Parking Pawl" in the transmission. This is a lever that engages a toothed gear when you put the truck in park, and it's what keeps the truck from moving. If the truck is hit when it's parked, it can snap this off and the truck will roll.

The parking pawl is located between the main body of the transmission and the extension housing.

I have worked in collision repair for over ten years and I have worked on plenty of vheicles that got hit in park.
None of those have had transmissions issues.
I am not saying that it could not be an issue, I am saying it is some thing I never have had to contend with.
