Been away for awhile, did the Jeep thing but now I'm back.
I just bought a 2000 sport. I found one with very little rust or body damage (rare up here).
I knew it had mechanical issues going in, so time to start fixing.

First, I'm not sure 4x4 is disengaging, the light goes off and it switches to rear wheel drive but the drive shaft continues to turn when driving, and the ABS light stays on. Is it normal for the front end to stay engaged?
Check engine light is on with the only code P0002.

If the truck is moving both drive shafts will spin. This is normal, whether in 2WD or 4WD. The disengagement happens in the transfer case and is not something that you can see.

The front driveshaft will continue to rotate as the hubs are locked all the time. Doesn't mean there is power going to it though.

P0002 is a code for when the ECM is not reading the sensor from the fuel pressure regulator. This is odd as the 4.0's didn't get a fuel pressure sensor until the 3rd gens. Its controlled by a regulator/check valve on the fuel pump sending unit in the gas tank.

Don't know what to make of that. :dunno:

Thanks again.
There seems to be an issue with the fuel system it turns over a lot before it gets fuel and starts.

Only other thing I can think of is that the fuel pump is not coming on when it should. Other than the injectors, that is literally the only other connection to the fuel system the ECM has.

Might be time for a new fuel pump.

A 2000 would have a return-less fuel system (regardless of engine). The return-less fuel system has a fuel pressure regulator in the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump assembly. This FP regulator is strictly a mechanical device (no sensor or electronics) and it rarely goes bad unless the plastic housing cracks. There is also a FP damper located on the injector fuel rail, but that's vacuum controlled, again not electronic. I don't what the P0002 code would mean on your system. Perhaps if does have something to do with the fuel pump nut turning on when it should.

If you Explorer has around 150K-200k on it, it's probably a good time to replace the fuel pump and the submersible fuel hoses. I've had to do this on all my 2000 and 2001 Explorers and Mountaineers. I used Bosch 69128 fuel pump replacement kits exclusively. They run around $40 on eBay and come with everything you need, except a strainer sock and a new fuel filter.

Tip: Stay away from Airtex brand fuel pumps. The one I installed lasted only 10K. I've had zero issues with the Bosch fuel pumps.
