So My friends Explorer has been Having troubled start issues. It wouldn't start sometimes and she used starting fluid which would do the trick until one day it wouldn't start at all. I replaced the fuel pump and it would start, idle for 2 seconds and die. I figured AutoZone sold me a bum pump so I replaced it again. It will now Idle longer but rough. It will idle smoothly with the MAF sensor unplugged, but will not rev up. I replaced the MAF, still no difference. Am getting Code P102, P1401. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My advice would be stop changing expensive parts on a guess, have the vehicle diagnosed by a mechanic you trust and go from there.
 






2002 Explorer, 4.0 Engine. I did mean P0102. If I give it any throttle it will bogg down and shut off.

Good advice.

You may also want to test the fuel pressure and see if it stays constant when it dies. If not then it's fuel related. (fuel pump, relay, regulator, filter, etc) If the F/P is good then you will just have to trouble shoot from there. I would seek out somebody who can help you, internet engine issues can be very hard to diagnose.
 






Fuel pressure stays constant, I believe its a control problem. Just wondering if anyone on this forum had some TS tips on the fuel control system. The original fuel pump was dead, no pressure at all. New pump and have pressure, it will run and rev up for the first 5 seconds, then sputter and die. I changed the MAF because the air box looked like a real bad backfire had happened and burned the filter, was a cheap part. Gonna take the down stream O2 in to work to test it out but I doubt that's the issue.

I changed my DPFE Sensor back in October of '11. Mine was throwing P0401. I got it at AutoZone for around $40. It took me about 2 minutes to change with no tools required. I changed it right in the parking lot! Just remove the electrical connector and pull it off the 2 rubber hoses, it's not screwed or bolted to anything.

I had a similar issue with mine as my MPG went down the drain. It did run fine however, but after changing that part, all was good again.

Just curious here. What made you change the DPFE sensor because you were getting lower gas mileage, but no CEL codes? Why that sensor? I just want to know because I get crappy gas mileage out of my V-6 and haven't had any CEL codes. Wondering if that might help my gas mileage problem, changing this DPFE sensor if my 2005 has one. I'm not sure at the moment.

Tom, as far as I know the DPFE sensor in the '05 is part of the EGR valve and can't be changed separately.

I would be interested to know also. My 02 is showing signs of lousy mileage. Dealer changed out the DPFE about 6 years ago when I first bought the car. No codes but looking at a bit of preventative maintenance.

Of course, lousy mileage can be the result of a dozen other things, too.

Thanks Ron! I thought I read about that some time ago, just couldn't remember for sure. I'd love to find a way to get better gas mileage out of this aside from getting rid of it and that isn't going to happen. With the new motor I have in this thing, I'm going to drive it till my feet fall thru the rotted out floor boards and I have to start stopping the Ex like "Fred Flintstone" did with his rock mobile. Freddy probably got better gas mileage out of his ride than I do. :p:

I wish I could find out which issue was causing the bad gas mileage, because it's not the usual tune up parts, those are all new or newer.
