I just bought my 05 explorer and looked under the hood the other day and the part that sucks the air into the air box is right behind my headlight. I might be wrong but it seems like it would be sucking in really hot air when my lights are on. Does anyone know any free mods to open or relocate my air box to lower the intake temp? I am going to buy a cold air at some point but I just had a baby and want to do it the cheap way right now if I can. Or does anyone know if I can just take the air box out and put a K&N cone filter on it?

When the vehicle is moving, there is not really much time for the light's housing to transfer heat into the air molecules to make any significant difference.

On my 94, I bypassed the air preheater (plug vacuum line also) and rerouted the air inlet to under the truck. I Cut the plastic shield under the engine compartment to allow rerouting. DIY Cold air intake.

I thought about cutting a hole in the bottom of the air box. I did not know if anyone has ever done this or if it would even make a difference.

Yes! But I had to enlarge the stock intake hose and hole to the airbox.

I added a 4" flexaspout adjustable from 1 to 2 feet long and ran it under the truck. (Lowes or Home Depot)

There was no room from the underside. Good Luck. :salute:

Could you tell any difference after you did this? Do you think I should just run it to the bottom of the truck or try to cut a hole somewhere that will not be seen and run it in the wheel well.

Did you keep the filter in the box or put it at the end of the flex tube that you sent to the bottom of the truck?

I have a 02 V8 explorer and i cut out the front of the airbox. Could tell a substantial difference above 3k rpm.

If you measure IAT, you will see that at speeds over 30-40 MPH, the IAT will be approximately the same as the ambient temperature.

Try it.
