I have a stock 2003 XLT 4.0 V6 and I know gas prices this summer are going to be retarded so I figured I'd try sqweeking the most mileage out of the X as possible. I get decent gas mileage (16-17 mpg this winter & 19-21 mpg last summer). I drive like a little old lady and keep my tires properly inflated. I read the topic "Quest for 30". So I've decided to mod the X a little. Currently I am running synthetic motor oil and will be flushing the tranny and differentials with synthetic as well, and I'll probably be swapping for an electric fan sometime soon and I wanna do an intake soon (obviously). So now my questions.

1. Is there a huge difference in power/mpg when using a modded stock airbox w/ a K&N filter over a cold air intake or vice versa??

2. Is there any way of removing the resonator from the intake tube and plugging it??

3. Any other suggestions??

I did not notice a huge change in mileage with my intake/exhaust mods. Every little bit helps though. Mostly for me I just liked the nice change in throttle response and sound.

My best improvements in mileage so far came from the underdrive crank pulley and electric fan. I ended up taking the electric fan off because I wasn't getting the best cooling from it in summertime slow traffic. I think that was due more to the type of fan I was using though. I would recommend a powerful one like the Mark VIII fans.

It just will take you a life time to recoup the costs of a air intake or exhaust. You would do better just overly maintaining your truck and driving smooth and staying at the speed limit.

x2 ... most mods arent for mpg boosts that will pay for themselves ... thats just an added bonus

I had the kn drop in filter and didnt notice much of a difference. With the full intake I have noticed a modest increase in response and also a slight mpg gain but I drive with a lead foot so nothing can help me mpg wise lol. If you have the cash Id say get the intake.

So there is no way of removing the resonator that is on the intake tube & my current mpg is the best I'll get?? Maybe I should start driving my H/C/I/N20 5.0 Mustang around daily as it gets just as good gas mileage.

here is my volant cold air intake i got for chirstmas, noticeable mpg increase, but also noticeable mpg decrease; due to the fact that it sounds fantastic and i cant keep my foot off the gas. :D
