Intercooling the 4.0 ohv/sohc with Ford Supercouper M90

Hi Don, the only trans cooler/heater I have is the one in my Radiator. This keeps the trans temp at about 185 degree's. I guess its good for winter, but not so good for summer when I'm pounding on the trans.

All I did was hit my front support area with rust check type spray whenever I thought of it. Sometimes a couple times a year, and sometimes I'd miss a year. I'm not sure if it helped or not as I've been pretty lucky with the rust thing so far.

Pcm

There are a couple of ebay sellers that make custom pcm wire harness extensions so you could relocate the pcm. I would suggest mass-airexperts, they made mine. It is 7 foot long and my pcm is under my center console now. Just search ebay for pcm harness extension.

Yea that is odd you don't have another tranny cooler up there.its normally right where that pump is.i would consider getting a stock one and putting it there.o ps if that's where you plan on putting the pump I would definitely find somewhere else for it.that's way too exposed:( didn't see it there last night

Why is there a problem with where the pcm is?

Could you do me a huge favour and get me a picture of the firewall area right at the trouble spot (Inlet to the SC) showing how your wiring runs now? Id like to get a better understanding of what I might be in for.

JD, this picture doesn't really show it, but the pcm connector and wiring harness bundle might be in the way when the SC inlet tube is raised 2 1/2 inches. Hopefully the picture helps.

Oo yea my ex didn't have that.I better go check the ranger now.I may be in the same boat as you all.I gota notch the firewall around there for my charger to clear:(

I'm still trying to understand relocating the pcm. Isn't there two connectors on it?
Maybe there's only one. I haven't looked under the dash. Maybe there's only the one connector on it?

That is the only connector for the PCM, but it doesn't move at all. That picture looks like it'll be right where the inlet plenum is going to be.

Is there any unused length in that inlet plenum between the blower and the turn behind it, going to the TB section? I"m guessing that there isn't, so you cannot shorten the turn at the blower.

You do need a trans cooler, for the application the trans needs cool ATF for sure.

Don, I can't really do anything with that inlet plenum. Its just tight, and that's it.

So, with a pcm harness extender, I could get that bundle of wires out of the way. It looks like even with the extender 4pointslow mentioned
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Ford-60-Pin-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a4d9e796&vxp=mtr

the wires would come straight out of the pcm rather that the current config and I'd be ok, and not have to move the pcm, just the wiring. Then the wires would be able to dip underneath the TB and air inlet tube. Its the fact that that connector goes directly across the firewall (And not in an easily moved manner) that is an issue.

I'm only seeing 12 ft extenders though. 6 ft would be more than enough for any application, as 4pointslow mentioned.

I'll have to start looking for a factory trans cooler at the pick and pull.

Somehow I don't think using an extender and moving that bundle of wires is going to look very pretty.
I wonder If I had one made that was only 8 inches if that would allow the existing harness just to drop down below the air inlet plenum. Then i wouldn't have a wiring mess on my hands, and the pcm would still be in stock configuration. I'll get a picture from top down showing the space from firewall to inlet plenum. What I'm saying will probably make more sense.

Even with the wires outa the way is the intake going to clear the firewall? Looks like it bulges out some there?

The additional tranny coolers were only on the SOHC explorers (maybe 5.0s as well?).

JD, I'll get a picture of 'top down'. I think I'll be ok. If not, I might be able to 'massage' the firewall slightly.

I do think the pcm wiring and connector will be in the way though.

Idk about that.I've seen them on 4x4 4.0 and know for a fact first gen 4.0 had them.mine came with one and so did a couple of my boys

Yea wires definitely look like they are in the way.hahah massage! !:hammer::hammer::sawzall::sawzall:

If the plenum ends up right at where the PCM connector is, which it appears that it will, maybe just move the PCM entirely, out and off to the side a bit. I don't know what other wires connect to that harness nearby, but those would limit which directions you can move the PCM.

I'm suggesting that the wiring can be used as it is, just move the PCM to a nearby location as far from heat as possible. It may not be possible or ideal, but get it out of the firewall and see where it might reach. Inside the firewall is the best place for it, but it isn't mandatory. The heat and moisture needs to be kept from the computer.

Lots of 95-01's had a trans cooler, besides the base models. Any high optioned or 4WD or 302 should have it.

You just had to point that out to me
That's my one complaint about doing all this work to my truck. Its kinda like trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I sure wish my truck had the options. :(

So, the pcm comes out from the engine bay side? Really? Delux!!

I'll try that before I drop $200.00 on a cable. Even if its a temporary solution to pull it and have it in the engine bay, it won't hold me up in my inter-cooler install.

If I figure out a way to do this without spending $200.00 id be happier. Fact is, I could extend the existing pcm harness in an evening myself. What I liked about the harness extender is that its a straight out connector.

I think a good afternoon of tedious wiring is well worth it. $200 is just too much. That money could be saved and spent in a better place. Take your wife to dinner and leave the rest for future plans :)

don, i have you covered if you need a cooler. one of the parts trucks will have them. as for your harness, i say we, you, me, which ever heads to bucks, finds a harness, and then extends that one. that way, you can put it where ever you want. also, doing it that way will make sure your truck isnt down for long. the only crappy thing about it is having to fish a different harness to the back of your trans.
