Year, Model & Trim Level
95 ford explorer XLT
Ok so i know where i can get a 96 explorer it has a 4.0 OHV with 207,000 kms,4x4 works perfect, transmission was rebuilt a little over a year ago, new brakes and wheel bearings/hubs up front, etc. The trucks body is in good shape with some minor surface rust starting around the gas door. The tires on the truck would need to be replaced. So my question is does this sound like it is worth 2500 dollars(canadian),is that the regular price for one of this year and condition,or is the price kinda high for an older truck? Thanks for any replies

My question is what are your going to do with this truck?
Just drive it around (daily driver)?
Street truck?
Looking to make this a off-road machine?
The reason I ask is if you are looking to do some off-roading, I would seriously look at anything other than a 95-96 year model. My reason for saying that is on the 95-96 models, you have 2WD, 4WD auto and 4Lo, which means that when you are in 4WD auto the truck only goes into 4WD when the control trac senses a slip in the wheels, then it goes into 4WD. Otherwise is stays in 2WD. 4LO is ok, but many time you really don't run in 4LO.
I used to have a 95, but after about 6 months of trying to off-road with it, I finally sold it and bought a 97, which had 2WD auto, 4HI, 4Lo. It worked much better.
If you are going to make it a daily driver, street truck or just to get you to the slopes, then the 96 is ok. Just my $0.02

Oh! and welcome to the site!

Im just planning on using it for a daily driver I have a 95 explorer now but my transfer case is shot and the motor has 300,000+ kms and a friend of my uncle has this one here and it seems in pretty good shape im just not sure what the average price one like this would sell for

Well Edmunds says anywhere from $1600.00 to $2500.00 U.S which means $1,977.98 to $3,090.59 CAD so what does it have, seeing as you are looking on the high side of the range. Is it a limited, XLT,XL? What kind of goodies does it have?

its an xlt with leather interior ,seperate climate controls for the backseats(on the back of the armrest),power seats, the digital console on the floor and roof,as far as i can tell it seems to have pretty well everything offered except it has no sunroof(i dont know if that is an option or not) and the air ride supsension

Sounds pricey to me for a '96 with only the OHV. There are a lot of 2nd gens out there sitting on lots that there is little demand for. Do yourself a favour and if you want OHV, make it a 5.0. :D

Im just looking for one in a good shapeand will be reliable.I have an entire new front end, freshly rebuilt transmission in the one i have (a 95) and the one im looking at is a 96 and has pretty well all the same stuff done to it as mine just the body and motor is in better shape than mine.

anyone else have any thoughts? If its not worth this much how much would you think it would be worth?

Bought my 98 over a year ago for 2000.00 CAN. 210,000km, 4.0l. Put in another 1000.00. So 3000.00 all together. Love the Ex. Great for pulling the boat, and never worry about getting stuck camping any more. Looking around the ads here I have seen several 98 for under 2000.00.

I picked up a 98 XLT with all the options minus ARC and Moonroof. I paid $1,500 USD out the door from a 5 star Ford dealership 2 blocks from my house. I see 97-01 explorers all the time on craigs list between $700 for one that needed a new 5.0 ($150 at local Junkyard) to $3,500 USD for a mint condition 01 with 77k miles. I routinely see 97 & 98 years go for $2,000 USD with under 150k miles for the 5.0.

I bought my 98 Sport 4x4 in early 06 with 123k mi on it in pristine condition for 4200 US. (It seems high but it was bought along with 10 others through some kind of fleet thing from a dealership, and I have the all the records for it, it was serviced like clockwork on the fleet program til i bought it.) Its been pretty indestructible for me. Its got 165k on it now (driving from SoCal to In and back a few times a year really adds up) and still runs like a champ. The only thing I have had to replace was front end stuff like ball joints, etc, and shocks. Well, and a cat-back, intake, XCal w/ bamachip tune. I don't have any experience with the OHV, but my SOHC truck has been extremely dependable. I was planning on trading it in on a full size FX4, but since someone decided to hit me in the drivers side rear corner, no note or anything of course. (and that body panel happens to be the entire truck) I'm just gonna keep this, do some off road type mods, and drive/wheel it til there's nothing left of it, lol
