I think THIS is the cause of all my problems , I only noticed it because it's so cold out the exhaust makes that vapor/smoke/steam thing. There's a loud clicking noise and the engine stutters along with it.

Yes

lol ok ty. I think this was the cause of my explorer running bad for soooo long. It's been running bad for two years and I had no idea why. I'm gonna change it out and hope for the best.

Also , is there a way to pitch the egr all together? We do not have emissions tests out here and I don't care for gas millage with this truck it sucks anyway.

if I pull out the vaccume line to it will that disable it?

Aftermarket valves are around $40, to fix it right.
EGR valve

We don't recommend disabling emission equipment.

you still cant mod a fed emissions and drive on any federal road.... regardless of state......

hence why aftermarket stuff that removes egr's is labeled off road use only.

you are still breaking a law. its like stealing cable, nobody cares till you get caught. or in an accident, or a fire, and its investigated.

umm , sure the car is for off road use only. ;)

Can it be disabled by pulling the vacuum line?

don't bother trying to remove it. Without it connected, your computer may switch your truck to limp mode and you will lose a lot of power and fuel economy. Plus, you will be spending money getting stuff to block it off anyways, so why not just spend the money on a replacement valve and not worry about it for another 20 years?

Besides, just unhooking the vacuum on the EGR will just make your truck run like crap all the time instead of rolling between crap and not crap like it does currently.

Yeah, it's better to replace it. EGR is a good thing to have.

It's no picnic to change out either. It takes a pretty large wrench(1-1/16"?) and it is in a very tight spot to get at. A crows foot wrench works about the best for it that I have seen. You could also cut a boxed/open wrench in half, but that will remove the leverage you need to get it off.

I attempted to remove an egr from a truck at the junkyard but the bolts where so rusty that the pipe leading off the exhaust broke off. I got the egr , but it goes to show that it cannot be changed on my truck. Not with how rusty the bolts are.

My other explorer I had also had the egr pipe broken off and it ran fine.

If you go around to enough cars and yards you will eventually find one that can be removed. I had to do this since canada discounted the EGR tube for the 96 and I had nowhere to go. I went to a couple of places and broke a couple of tubes before I found one that came off clean.

hit em with PB or JB-80 for a couple days. Eventually it will penetrate.

ok I got an idea , I'll just pull the vacuum line off and attach it to the egr that I pulled , thus disabling the original one but allowing the car to think one is still connected.

Dude.. you've worked this hard on the truck to get it all painted, now why not fix it right? With some patience and PENETRATING oil it shouldn't be too bad. Its not like its your everyday driver anyhow.

By the way your idea will not work at all... not even close.

ncranchero, that's funny! could you imagine actually being in that saab? It would get so annoying

all that will do is cure the cel (and probably net you a different one).... it won't make the truck run better.

I don't get it , why would the truck run worse with the egr off? Considering most first gens don't even have an egr.

I have the worst luck mechanically. I'll end up breaking the thing trying to get it out or breaking something else. When you paint a car there's no risk , it'll still move. But if I screw up the engine I'm screwed. And this actually is an important driver , my hondas are not bullet proof and have their own problems too and I need this explorer. I had to sell my other explorer for rent this month and if there a cheap or free way to fix this stupid thing I'll do that first over buying a 40$ thing that only improves emissions which they don't even check around here , and on top of that which most explorers don't have anyway.

because this engine is tuned to run with the EGR. With the EGR it can run more advanced timing curves and different mixtures. EGR doesn't just improve emissions, if that was all they did, it would be cheaper for ford to add another catalytic converter

Why did my other explorer run fine w/o it? It ran so quietly and smoothly. This one is obviously broken and is obviously causing the engine to run worse then better.
