Well now where to start I have been chasing this loud clankety rattling noise under the x for months now. The Dealer has replaced a few things including all the cats, and seen the vehicle a few times now. Long story short. It has sounded like there is a marble bouncing around in my Bellhousing since soon after purchase in september 03. The told me today that there is a TSB out that calls the noise just that marble noise. They say it is common in higher mileage late model 4.0's both ranger and explorer. They offered no explanation of what actually causes the noise. But they claim that it will have no adverse effects and needs no repairs. Any input?

I dont have an answer but if its common and no need for repairs (so they say) then why did they try to fix it the first few times? Seems like they are feeding you crap.

Lifter noises? That's all I can think of at the moment.

I thought of the lifters, but the noise is very centralized to the bell housing. I used a tool similar to a stethescope, only for small animals. I can definately hear it there, but can't decide if it is on the tranny side or engine side.

How loud is the clank? It could possibly be a loose or bad torgue converter.
