'04 XLT
Recently bought my '04 XLT used, and it has a switch on the dash I'm not familiar with. Toying around with it, I'm not sure what it does, either. Anyone wanna help out a noob?

- As far as I can tell, the stereo is a pretty basic setup (doesn't seem to be a special package or anything, but I haven't checked too much).
- Does have the factory DVD player option.

So far (updated):
Definitely not fog lights.
No extra wiring going to the battery.

EDIT - picture doesn't seem to want to hotlink, so click the link.
(Sorry for the camera-phone quality)

post a picture ;)

No.....the little red X did not come stock on any year explorer.

Although, a BIG X does appear when you hit the brakes on a 2nd gen (well, 2.5) Explorer...

OK... abandoned the "link the image" approach and just went with a URL to the image. Someone see if THAT works?

No, its not stock, maybe someone has done the brown wire mod??

Pull off the bezel and see where it goes to; and check out the pigtails, see if they are factory.

(And welcome to you bbryant :)

Thanks for the info. I was hoping it was some stock doohickey, but I guess I'll have to do some work. I was really hoping to avoid having to disassemble the dash, but I guess there's no way around it. :(

Thanks!

No, just remove the bezel. Leave the dash alone.

Well, yeah, just the bezel. But I didn't want to have to disassemble ANYTHING. :p:

Also, given where the wires go, I may end up taking the dash apart... :(

I don't have one, Anything look added on or Aftermarket?
If you had a Sub?
Alarm? any power going to it?
I doubt its the BWM no Switches for 4WD above.

Switches for 4WD could be on the other side of the bezel if there is no message center, which could be a really good possibility.

No clue on the "added or aftermarket" dept. I'd never even been inside an Explorer before last month. Nothing is glaringly obvious. There's no aftermarket sub enclosure visible, but maybe something is stashed in a side panel or something. Also not sure on alarm. The remote I got is standard Ford, but maybe the previous owner kept the alarm remote (or whole alarm).

As helmsa said, the 4WD switches are on the driver side. My XLT does have 4WD.

How would I know if that's what it is? Is there any easy test? I would prefer not to "turn switch on, try burnout" for obvious reasons...

When I get a free day, I'll remove the bezel and report my findings. Thanks to everyone so far!

One thing to check is...does your X have fog/driving lights and if it does are they factory? Switch for factory would be in the headlight switch...turn to any location other then off and pull out to turn factory fogs on.

I have never seen a amp/sub setup on a switch like that. Next step looks to me like you need to trace the wires...We are just shooting in the dark with our suggestions as to what they could be. Keep us posted.

As best I can tell, fogs are factory. They have the factory switch (which works). And no extra lighting seems to come on if I flick the mystery switch.
