Is this vibration normal?

This is the same thing that happened to me, however, the highest octane fuel available to me is 91. This seems to have helped but not completely cure the issue. Maybe the knock sensor is detecting a bit of knock and backing out the timing hence the shutter?

I also only have 91 octane available to me but thankfully do not have any shutters or vibrations in our sport. I have even put 88 octane in it twice (Chevron if that helps) and did not notice any difference at all. I now continue to put 91 octane in, just because I feel that the car would probably be thanking me or something silly, since it's recommended. As soon as the '14 Suburbans come out we will be trading it in, so I'm sure I could experiment more with different octanes and not have too much guilt on my conscious lol

I also only run premium now just for a little bit of peace of mind. I will have to pay closer attention to notice if the shutter is gone now that the weather has warmed up.

My 2011 FWD limited does it too. Brought it to the dealer today and they could not feel it. I said they were crazy and came in to test drive with the tech and it did NOT do it!! Turns out he did a hard reset on the sync system for another complaint I had first. I am wondering if disconnecting the battery for 20 mins caused my wobble to go away... I thought it was a cv axle going bad but now it seems more like a control issue (ecm programming). My explorer is also updated to the latest ecm re flash.

2014 Explorer vibration

Hello, I am new to the forum but would like to ask for your advise and opinions.
I recently purchased a 2014 explorer 4wd xlt, my first ford. I love the vehicle but since new have had a vibration in the car which is driving me mad and ruining the new car experience.
The vibration is more heard than felt in the car and most prominent at around 35 and 55 mph. Though today a friend travelling in the back seat said it can be felt in the back seats. The vibration / noise oscillates in and out at the indicated speeds. The car has been to the dealer multiple times, tyres changed, balanced and a rim changed but no change to the vibration. I have tried opening a window or sun roof to see if it was wind or buffeting but this did not change the vibration either. If anyone has any similar issues, comments or likely causes it would be appreciated. Currently awaiting the dealer to call with the next move.
Thank you

I would be at the dealer`s service door first in line in the AM. Its a new vehicle & that`s what the warranty is for. Use it for all its worth.

It sounds like you have a drive line issue.

Welcome to the Forum Dj101.:wavey:
Sorry to hear about your issue. Unfortunately it is not unusual. If you do a 'Search' on "vibration" you will see a few existing threads. I will move your thread/post to this one as per my PM.
Good luck.

Hi Dj101,

I want to step in and assist. To get started, send me a PM with your information (full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and preferred servicing dealership) and I'll get your regional customer service manager involved.

Well I can say that my 2014 Sport is possibly trying to kill me.... Most mornings, cold, well here in California (about 45-60) if I leave then hit the freeway or anytime making left turns mainly the vehicle will on most occasions shudder, sometimes dropping out of gear then reengaging or we will call it badly slipping.

If you feather the throttle it will shudder like traction control is trying to send power out or as we know most traction control is based on the ABS system it seems like it is having a mental breakdown under accel and does not know what to do..

Best so far was getting onto a very busy section of freeway, hit the left turn signal and tried to accel and it just fell on its face, Zero RPM - then high revs - then when I started to pull out of traffic to come to a stop it re-engaged and did not act up for the rest of the day.

I have zero confidence in the vehicle as its not reproducible each day but happens more than me thinking it is a one time deal.

It will be going back to the dealer to fix the list of other issues, with this one now being at the top of the list.

Very concerning - and honestly at 2200 miles if they need to pull the drive line, I really do not think that is acceptable for a vehicle that is 50K

I do know there is a supposed mapping issue for hard accel issue that the police vehicles seems to be having, but that is a different engine.. but if the drive lines are similar for the AWD systems maybe that is the answer.

My 02 EB Explorer has a slight vibration only when the throttle hits a certain point/spot. It does it when you are letting off the gas at a certain spot and or when you are pushing the throttle and it gets to a certain point, but only last long if you keep it there at that point or spot while driving. I would like to fix this problem soon. Thanks

Im bumping this because my 2014 sport has a vibration too....here are the notes that I've made based on when I can hear the noise:

1- Normal 4WD Anytime cruising, accelerating or decelerating through 47-48 mph. Noise level low
2- Normal 4WD- same as above, unless accelerating while losing grip to front wheels between 46-50mph, and torque being distributed to rear wheels. Noise level high when wheels losing grip (noted because it is snowing here, so lousy road conditions allow for slippage of wheels thus torque transfer to rear of vehicle).
3- Sand 4WD- same as 1, unless accelerating between 46-50mph. Noise level highest.
4- Snow 4WD- same as 1, unless accelerating between 46-50mph, noise level slightly less than when in Sand, noise almost identical to note #2
5- Noise independent of gear/engine RPM. Tested all of above scenarios in various gears. Noise always louder when more torque is distributed to rear wheels, however noise is always present when vehicle is moving 47-48 mph regardless of whether I am on gas, braking, cruising.
6- Noise appears to be coming directly under center console shifter area, where driveshaft brace/bushing is located.

VERY slight shudder in the pedal. Nothing detected in steering wheel. I hear it more than I feel it, its a low pitched hum.

BTW, I have 1200 miles on my 14 ex sport. Had it into one dealer who claimed that they felt the same thing in another used sport they had on the lot. Luckily Crystal is already involved, and its going to a different dealership on Thursday.

Completely unacceptable for a 50k car, which as of this moment makes more drivetrain noise than my 07 mustang GT with 3.73's and a 5 speed manual.

Be sure to let us know how things go on Thursday, Marksman14. If I can be of any additional assistance, just let me know.

Our 2012 Limited had this, but with no noise/sound to it at all. I think there is another thread somewhere on here about this 'wobble'. It was very distinct and you could feel it in the floor and pedals, but not the steering wheel. On our car it started somewhere between 7000 - 10000 miles, and continued until it was traded in.

Funny story, but the only way I was ever able to make it more clear to people what the issue was, was discovered by accident. One mothers day, I was driving an orchid over to my mother-in-laws. It was sitting on the passenger side floor. Driving out down my street we hit the wobble speed and flower starts bouncing back and forth... doing the wobble... Apparently its light weight on a tall stick stem let it pick up the vibrations and show them as nothing else could...

My sport is just over 1000 miles with no wobble yet... thank god. Good luck with yours!

Did anything get resolved? I ask because I have a similar issue... I am watching the rpms and it seems to get a deep resonating drone at just under 2k.... which is about 55 or in town around 35...BUT my wife swears she did not hear it till I put on my step bars. Are there any step bars or running boards installed on yours? When my weather breaks a bit here I am going to take them off and see if it still still there but we're thinking it's just a low vibration unheard normally that is getting amplified by resonating in the bars. Figured I'd try the easy stuff first then hit the dealer if it still persists.

The explorer is back in the shop for the wobble..... It returned pretty quick after picking it up. The service advisor went for a ride with me yesterday and he felt it. Got a call today that there are updated front cv axles available. Both were ordered and will be installed tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I'll keep an eye out for your updates, sd1979. If you need my help, I'm always just a PM away. Be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership; I'll research some ways to assist.

Please keep us updated on this... That darn wobble was one of the reasons I was really keen on trading in the Limited for the Sport. If it ever shows it's nasty face on our Sport I will want it gone! :D

I too have the wobble issue and the dealer has not been able to reproduce it. Sub'd for updates.

I just picked it up from the dealer and in the 6 mile drive home I did not notice it! I think I'm in the clear. They replaced both front axles.
