I found this '88 b2 2.9l 5 speed with manual t-case and hubs for $500 what i am double checking is that the trans will bolt up to my 4.0 as is?

Do you know which transmission this BII has in it? I believe most '88's had the Mitsubishi FM146 transmission. It should technically bolt up to your 4.0 (as the 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern). One consideration- the FM 146 is not a favorite transmission. It may not hold up that well to your 4.0.

The FM146 swap is not as common or as robust as the M5OD swap, but I have heard of it being done.

its most likely the mitsu trans and i've heard about them not holding up to the 4.0, i am just needng it to get me and the siblings to school and me to work and 4-5 months from now swapping to the m50d. also the the flywheel bolts up to the 4.0 right? and the manual hubs do they swap over to?

The bolt pattern is the same (same Engine family).

But why change transmission and do it again in 5 months? Is the Bronco not running? Use this one until you fixed the Explorer.

this vehicle was abandoned so no title and can't get one because you would have to talk to the guy who owned it and he is in prison for life. and so the wrecker has had it for the last 4 years and they want it gone.

I'm not familiar enough with the swap to know one way or the other. I thought the tech library over at therangerstation.com (assuming they are still there) had a page specifically for the A4LD to FM146 swap, so you might go see if that is correct.

and the manual hubs do they swap over to?

I don't think there is anything interchangeable between the Dana 28 TTB (BII) and the Dana 35 TTB (Explorer). You could check and see if the previous owner of the BII had already swapped in a D35, but it seems unlikely.

Yea i didn't think the hubs would just wanted to be sure, also will the steering column and gauge cluster swap over so the swap looks more like stock?

Then you would need a manual drive shaft. Or you may be able to swap yokes.the spline count should be different from auto to manual, I know it is on 2wd for a fact.someone may wanna confirm this for 4x4 tho

Were you planning to swap in the 13-50 manual t-case from the BII or stay with the stock 13-54 t-case in the Explorer? If memory serves, the 13-50 uses a different output to the front shaft, so you may need to do something there. Rear output is the same, for either t-case, I believe.

Did you verify the transmission model? I'm pretty sure the FM 146, M5OD, and A4LD are all the same length. The FM145 and TK transmission were shorter, I think. If you are swapping in the FM 146 and using the original 13-54 t-case, you should be able to use your original driveshafts. If you have a different transmission, or if you are using the 13-50 transfer case, you may need to modify one or both driveshafts.

seeing as the b2's t-case is manual, i was wanting to use that one instead of having to swap the t-cases around. how do i verify what trans it is?

I don't remember all the things to look for. As I recall, the tech library at therangerstation.com had a description of each transmission used in ranger based vehicles and how to tell the transmissions apart. If you haven't been over there, yet, you might look over there and see if they have that information.

thanks i completely forgot about trs, also i believe i found what i was looking for in this http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/AllanD_transguide.htm it says the m5 has 14 pan bolts and the fm146 has 12. can anyone verify this?
