2000 Explorer 5.0 XLT
Well, Tuesday night I lost my good friend, a 2000 XLT 5.0. I bruised my ribs good and Michelle broke her wrist and had surgery yesterday. We were traveling on a dark, country backroad, missed a turn, and ended up nose-in a very muddy embankment. Haven't seen it in daylight yet, but plan to bring it home Monday. Has anyone had an experience with a tow company taking an insurance tow following a MVA to their yard instead of the owners home as instructed? Chi Town Towing in Chiloquin, Oregon did just that. They stole my car if you ask me.

Wow....sorry for your loss.... Maybe you could find a reasonable Explorer replacement.... did the airbags go off ? ....I assume so...

I hope everyone is okay, best wishes.

You’ll have to pay to have it returned. They didn’t steal your car. You were driving too fast and caused an accident and left a disabled vehicle where it shouldn’t be. Insurance will cover the tow to the yard, you’re responsible to bring it anywhere else.

If you’ve got full coverage you’ll have to buy it back first, since it’s totaled.

Standard procedure following an MVA. I’m a vollie FF/EMT and we work with the wrecker guys a whole lot.

I’ve never seen a vehicle go anywhere but the tow yard.

If you think you’ve been wronged, take them to small claims. It isn’t a a criminal matter—the police won’t even entertain it.

Ditto, and I hope your wife recovers quickly. Contact your insurance company immediately, about the costs the towing company is charging daily for storing the truck. The faster you act, the less those costs will be. I'd also call and go down to the truck if you can, and retrieve any things that are valuable from it, now.

WOW! Aren't you just a positive guy. First of all, following an accident, the owner has the right to have a totaled vehicle towed to a repair shop, tow yard, or residence. I am aware I will have to pay retain the vehicle, but I am not at that point with the claim.

I was not driving too fast, an accident is just that... an accident, and I did not leave a disabled vehicle where it shouldn’t be. I allowed a tow company that somehow has managed to remain on rotation with 911 dispatchers to remove my car only to have my instructions ignored so they could capitalize on overcharging the insurance company for the bill.

In the future, you might leave your comments to another forum that welcomes negative, critical, unwarranted statements.

You weren’t driving too fast? Then were you not paying attention? Accidents don’t just happen. They all have a cause. What was the cause for this accident? Certainly it wasn’t an unavoidable accident.

Insurance paid tows will always go to the towing yard. That’s how it works.

Nobody “stole” your car. Post nonsense and I’ll respond “negatively”.

Whatever. You can blow up your storyou dont know what you are talking about. Find someone else to annoy with what you don,t know.

Whatever. You dont know what you are talking about. You weren't there. And No, insurance tows DO NOT always go to the yard. It is the owners choice. I know this from personal experience. Good bye and good riddance. Find a new thread to stalk.

What caused the accident? Funny how you ignored this. Accidents don’t ever “just happen”.

As a member of this forum, I’ll post on any threads I like.

@MichelleMD

Sorry to hear about the loss of your Ex, and about your wife having her wrist broke.

Hope that she has a quick recovery, and that you find a worthy replacement ride.

I think he is referring to standard procedure after a accident
As far as towing and police policy

@MichelleMD
Sorry to hear about the loss of your Ex. Praying for fast recovery and repair or replacement

@Mbrooks420 where did you get these facts? I sure did not see them
Something caused the accident. Typically if you can’t stop and go off the road and total a vehicle there’s a cause. It’s almost always going to fast for conditions.

An accident isn’t ever just an accident. there is always a cause. They told us in drivers Ed to forget about the word accident and call it what it actually is, a collision.

It’s totaled as everything but fact because it’s a 2000, and there were injuries. I could total a 2000 Explorer with a single kick.

He said what caused it: "We were traveling on a dark, country back-road, missed a turn, and ended up nose-in a very muddy embankment." Granted he did not elaborate on it. Could be speed, it could be an unfamiliar rod and the turn was unexpected - I've had that happen to me and was so far out that the tow trucks don't come there.

I was curious how you know these things:
1. they left a disabled vehicle where it shouldn’t be.
2. since it’s totaled.

I’ve never once just up and missed a turn. You don’t just “miss” turns. You can be driving too fast to make the turn. You can be driving too fast to see the turn. You can be just not paying attention enough and miss it. They don’t just jump out in front of you without cause.

1. I’m just assuming it wasn’t running and drivable out of the muddy bank. If a vehicle is damaged, even parked on the road the police will have it towed entirely without your say.

2. It’s a 2000 Explorer that crashed into a bank hard enough to break some ones wrist and put some against their seat belt, dash, or wheel hard enough to hurt their chest. Do you think it’s not totaled? I’ll bet you $100 bill that it is.

Assuming it is not running and drivable is not "they left a disabled vehicle where it shouldn’t be." I got from his story that he was there when the tow truck got there, so it was not "left:"

Okay, I’ll concede that. Maybe it wasn’t
“left”.

I’ll still stand behind someone being at fault, and it being a write off.

Wanna take that $100 bet?
