I've got a big jumper-cable connector that I want to put on my FPIU, but I remember seeing something about problems if putting chargers or jumpers directly onto the battery.

Does anyone know how I should do this, to NOT have electrical problems?

I have hooked up my charger to several of my vehicles when the battery was low. The method I've always followed is to always connect to the positive (red) terminal first and then connect the negative jumper to a ground point of the engine to prevent possible explosions. When charged, remove the black (ground) cable first then the positive (red) cable. Before starting the procedure ensure that the battery charger is in the OFF position. Although some connect the negative cable directly to the negative terminal of the battery, I believe using a ground point is the safest and more popular method.

Thanks, but I want to hook up a permanent, big Anderson connector, mounted on the push bar. Then I can just plug the jumper cables into that, without having to open the hood.

I wasn't quite sure if that was what you wanted. When I bought my charger it came with an adapter that I could hook up permanently to the battery so I could do basically what you want. That adapter would fasten to the positive and negative battery terminals.

I've seen FPIUs set up like I want, but not sure how they do it.

I'm wondering if an exposed plug like that could also be used to drain the battery if some person decided to hook up something to it or attempt to short it.

Look for the Police Modifier Guide that FORD published for up-fitters to use while installing PD radios and lighting. It has info about where and how to make connections to the factory wire harnesses.

Even if the info you are looking for may not be there, the guide is good to have.
