so my alternator went on my 1999 explorer sport, so i decided to head to the junk yard for a used one. I found a 96 sport so i grabbed the alternator off it, i get home not realizing at the time it was off a 4.0 ohv not a 4.0 sohv, so my question is will it fit, i know the plug is positioned different and its a little bigger, but it seems like it should fit, just wanted to know before taking everything off

Im 99% sure it will bolt up. Sounds like your truck came with the 90 amp alternator and you grabbed a 130 amp. A common upgrade. It should bolt up and work just fine.

cool thanks for clearing it up

just an update i went out today to install the alternator, turns out only 2 of the 3 bolts line up no biggie, still sits normally, just the bottom bracket is a little longer, and i needed to extend the ground about 6 inches so it would clear other than that it works fine

Interesting, I was thinking it should have been 100% bolt up.

Thanks for checking back in =]

I was always under the impression that the SOHC and OHV 5.0 share alternators and the OHV 4.0 uses a different one. I think you just confirmed that. I swapped my aftermarket alternator from my SOHC to my 5.0 without a hitch. Sounds like you're on top of retrofitting your junkyard gem though.

ya it was from a 4.0 ohv going on a 4.0 sohc i didnt think it would have been a problem but the only difference was the bottom bracket and where the plugs are located, everything else was the same
