I recommend anyone who needs to change their transfer case fluid to A) use synthetic and B) don't be afraid because it is seriously the easiest thing to do. Without jacking up my 2000 explorer i was able to flush the fluid out and replace it with Mobil 1 ATF. You don;t even nbeed to get under the truck since the tyransfer case is pretty much within an arms reach under the driver's side. There are two bolts that you need to identify (both are facing the back of the truck): the bottom on on the left of the transfer case (drain) and one to the top right (fill). Simply put an oil change pan under the transfer case and undo the bottom drain bolt. this will let out approximately 1.5 quarts of ATF. After it stop dripping, ratchet off the fill bolt and let gravity pull the rest of the fluid out of the case. After this replace the bottom drain plug and tighten snugly. Buy a pump ($6) that is used to attach to a 1 gallon container, which allows you to pump out the new ATF into to the top fill holen of the transfer case. I found mine near the marine grease section of the store. You need this becase there is not enough room to pour straight from the ATF container. Place the other end inside the transfer case fill hole and pump 1.5 quarts of new ATF into the case. You should fill to approximately the bottom of the fill plug. I simply pumped till it came out a bit and then sucked a little back out so it was under the fill level. Attach the fill bolt and tighten snuggly. Drive your car around the block and check for leaks. Done and Done!

Did you worry about putting one of those perma-cool filters in line. Some recommend this after changing fluid in Automatic transmission since you loosen some sludge. I'm glad to hear it is so easy since I need to do this on my '99 Sport, but I'm wondering how difficult it is to install the twist on filter kit since I'm don't want to cut any lines.

He's talking about the transfer case, not the Transmission. Adding the filter is simple, just run a search, many have done it.

I need to do all my fluids, glad to hear its that simple!

In my 98, Ford calls for Mercon in the transfer case while they call for Mercon V in the tranny. Is this the same for your 2000? Did your Mobil One Synthetic ATF say it was compatible with Mercon? I believe Mercon is a petroleum based non-synthetic and allthough I'm not sure, I thought I heard that Mercon V is synthetic (it doesn't really say whether it is on the bottle). So, I guess what I'm asking is are you sure it's OK to put synthetic in the transfer case when Ford calls for Mercon? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes it is OK to use mobil 1 ATF in the transfer case as mobil-1 is Mercon compatible.
