I'm making minor mods to my stock 98 Sport for moderate off-roading. After new tires, I was looking at replacing the stock drop in air filter and was wondering what advantages (if any) there are to the K&N? Thank you.

You will not gain neck breaking power gains, but the gain is more than worth the cost. You will notice a slight gain in throttle responce and the engine will accelerate a little stronger. I run K&N's in every vehicle I own, and recomend them to anyone that asks.

just got my explorer a month ago, found this forum 2 days later, read everything i could about the K&N filters and the air box mod, made the mod to the air box and got the K&N filter and I'm very pleased with the results. It's as good as everyone said it would be.

A little off the subject but does anyone have the pt. number for the K&N drop in filter for a 91. I will probably buy one soon at Auto Zone with my birthday money. Also, how hard is it to clean the filter and how often does it have to be cleaned? Thanks

Just got the K&N drop-in late yesterday and agree with what's been said. No huge increase in power, but my vehicle does seem to accelerate much more smoothly. Before, every now and then, I'd get some hesitation when pulling away from a stop.

Definitely the best $47 I've spent on my Explorer thus far, thanks to all for your comments!

Brian,
My 91 uses a 33-2024 filter. It says you only have to clean it every 50-100K miles. I have cleaned mine once and it was after about 5K miles and it didn't really even need it. When you do clean it, just be sure not to get too much oil back on it when you spray it.

Around here, AutoZone does not carry K&N. Advance Auto Parts is the dealer.

Hope this helps.

I used to be schizophrenic, but we're OK now...No we aren't...Yes we are... shut up.

mmpc,Did you drill holes in the air box?

No, I didn't drill any holes although I'd love to achieve the performance increases others have after making that mod. Problem is my Explorer is a lease (my 3rd since '93) and that could well be considered "excessive wear & tear" when I go to turn it in... Dead Link Removed

Well I just got mine today and put it in. It does seem to have more throttle response when I really step on it. I will see how well it really does tommorow when I take it to the mountains to do some light offroading. I did get mine at Autozone for about $44 + tax.
