When i got my X it only came with one key. I managed to gain two uncut keys from the US with the chips in. The problem i have is programing them into the X. The manual claims that you can program extra keys if there are already two existing keys, which however i dont have.

I enquired at the local ford dealer and they claimed £75 to program the key

Does anyone know a way around this so i dont have to fork out a fortune?

Is there anyway of duplicating the key or something?

Some say they have had success, by trying to fool the computer, using the 3rd key program method. You might try it.
Just pull the key out as instructed-then flip it, reinsert as the "second key" and follow from there.
Otherwise, yes it is a dealership job, the price varies. I have heard $100 has been paid.

The PATS module is the issue. If there are one or no keys programmed into it, you can add to it one at a time, like the manual describes. After there are 2-8 keys already recorded into the PATS module, you must have two of those to add another.

A special diagnostic tool(dealership) is required to remove/clear all of the codes from the PATS module. Once the module is cleared, one key can be added alone, then a second with the first, by you. Clearing the PATS module is the bid deal.

The PATS module is married to the PCM, they are programmed together, you cannot change one without reprogramming. Good luck,

ok so in theory i can still program an extra key into to the PATS even though i only have one original?

If so then i don't need to go to the dealership i can just get the key cut and then add the key, as in the manual description.... If that makes sense lol

You don't know how many are already programmed into the PATS module. It is a safe assumption that everyone makes, that all vehicles have had at least two added already. Once two or more have been added, you have to have at least two of those, to add more.

This should explain why once in a while someone claims to have added a key by only using the one that they have. Those were lucky people, their PATS module only had the one code in it.

Thus everyone who has this problem with a newly bought vehicle, should try to add keys with just the one key. You might be very fortunate, but expect it to not work, and plan to be getting help by the dealer. Good luck,

For some weird reason the ETIS system also states that new keys should have an "S" on the shank - we've got a second key that will unlock the vehicle - but will not start it and we can't get it programmed in as, even though the key was supplied by a Ford dealer, the tech won't go past the step in ETIS that says "make sure replacement key has an "S" stamped on the shank" :( No idea where we go from here having been charged £70 for the blank key........

Mind you - we also had to go to a locksmith to get the key cut as apparently Ford main dealers can no longer cut keys!!!

My Ford dealer charged £60ish for a new key about 4 years ago. The Ex I had back then came with one working key and another with the chip bit broken off. The cost included supplying & cutting the key and wiping any non-existant keys from the PATS memory.
