So I get in my X yesterday and drive out to pick up some parts from doradaexplorer and when I get to his house I notice a 7ft key mark down the drivers side of my truck, from the front tire to the rear tire. It just so happend to be at the perfect height of this rust bubble I had under the paint and it blew it wide open. the rust spot is the size of a quater or so.

The scratch is pretty deep, and If my truck hadn't been repainted 2 times in the past it would be to the metal, but its down to the primer and is like a 1/8 inch high(top to bottom of scratch).As for the rust spot its right on the lip of the drivers side door the side near the fender, any ideas?

Short of repainting again (which the truck could use) i dont think there is anything that is going to make this scratch look any better, any help would be apreciated. I will try to get pics tomorrow, Thanks in advance, Jon

having had the same experience, there isnt anything to make it look better other then lots of sanding and another painting. im still pissed cause even to this day almost 4 years later that side of my truck still doesnt look right! and its been painted twice since then! good luck with it!!

Try some color match compound. They say that it is good for scratches. This is the price to pay for living in NY. It's impossible to keep anything nice. I've been side swiped, and dented just by having my vehicles parked. It is very aggravating, but is a pretty common thing. Just about everybody I know has had it happen to them at least once, or twice with at least one, or more vehicles. My friend's car was totaled when he had it parked in front of his building when he was at work. He rented a car during the time that his was out of commission, and the rented vehicle was also totaled in the same parking spot! Just in case you were wondering where he lives, it is on Ocean Parkway, and Ave. J. The place all this happens is around the corner on Bay Parkway.

Yeah I hate parking on ocean parkway. well Im thinking about my options, my neighbor owns his on body shop on coney island ave and has helped out my dad very much in the past(new running board, fog light, and the whole drivers side door was dented in like 3 inches verticaly and he only charged 800. Im hoping maybe he will give me some kind of break on a total repaint, not just that side(cause the color will never be perfect).

It's a lot cheaper to try color match first.

Slide your finger nail down the body. If your fingernail catches it repaint is the only quality repair.

yeah the fingernail does catch it, its very noticable and very deep. I am pretty sure a repaint is what is needed but i dont want to shell out 1000$ for my deductable(my parents keep full coverage even though its more then 10 years old) a$1000 is still better then $2000 out of pocket, I will talk to my neighbor today and see what he says.

I know that it can't be the best quality, but Earl Scheib on Kings Highway, and near Foster Ave. advertises cheap jobs for a few hundred. I know somebody that went there, and got a cheap paint job. It wasn't the best quality, but on an old car, it was good enough. I know somebody else that went to Macco, and got a better job, but paid over $1k. I guess you get what you pay for.

even though my truck is 12 years old I still want a quality job, I will probably bring it to CNA on coney Island ave thats my neighbors shop, when I can get the money together. they will repair the small rust spot , take out any dings that I have and paint for around $2k, I think Ill see if for a little more he will put a thicker clear coat on to resist scratches better.

Well guys after the rust spot being now fully exposed how should I go about getting it down to the bare metal? its right on the lip and 2 inches into the door about 1 inch high. Whats the best way to get it to bare metal? wire wheel? thanks for the help, I hope to start repair tomorrow.

Do you have any fine sand paper, or an electric detail sander that takes sandpaper with velcro? I have one from Sears that takes special sandpaper which clips into it. It has different types of plastic shapes for the sandpaper to roll around. It vibrates at a fast rate, so it would be good for fine detailed work.
