When I got my new Explorer (92 4x4) I put on a KKM induction and flowmaster force II catback. Now I have pinging when running anything less than 93. The ping is most noticeable when under a little bit of a load such as going up hill or accelerating without downshifting. I have noticed that during the first few minutes of a trip it doesn't ping, but after the engine is warm it does. I cleaned the MAF sensor and visually checked the vacuum lines. Would insulating around the filter help some, and running a cold air line from under the chassis. I was also thinking about trying some sort of scoop on the hood to get some air flow around the filter if I find that air temp is definitely the problem. Something like this:
Dead Link Removed

Do you think that air temp is the problem, or am I looking at a bigger issue all together.

Just curious if you have reset the computer since you did the mods. This will help adjust the air flow and gas mixture.
If you haven't then you need to disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 15 minutes, after you reconnect it you need to start the engine and let it run at idle for about 15 minutes then drive it at normal operating conmditions for about 1/2 hour.
Hopefully it will run better after all that.
If you already have reset the computer then I'm not sure what is causing the pinging.

Yes, I have reset the computer a couple different times while working on the car. Didn't help.

Its pinging because its sucking in hot air. I had this same problem on my Mustang when I ran a open filter setup. I suggest building some sort of shroud around the filter. Anything to keep it from sucking in the hot air from the fan.

Thanks, I'm going to try some stuff this weekend, if its not snowing out.

I run a KKM and custom cat back and have NEVER had a ping; also I live in Florida where it is usually HOT.

aldive,

I think your new engine is probably a lot smarter than my 92. For example I'm pretty sure the SOHC has a knock sensor that advances the timing if it senses knock. I don't think the first generation Explorers have anything like that. Probably why you haven't had problems.

hey byrd... howd those f150 spacers and shackles work out for you, im thikning about doing that.. whered you get your parts, how much, and did you encounter and problems afterwards??? camber?

Spacers and shackles are great, don't have 31's yet though, trying to talk my parents into letting me put on a James Duff lift and getting 32s. Anyway, shackles are about $50 for the warrior ones but you could use generic ones. F-150 seats are $15 each and you do need an allignment, which could be as much as $150. You can find the part numbers for the F-150 seats, do a search on the board, and call 4wheelparts for the warrior shackles.

I never said that ALL vehicles with open element air filters will ping. Some do, some don't. My Mustang did, but my S10 didn't, so I left it on.

Check your plugs. If they are old or the gap is too big pinging can frequently occur. Mine did until I put in +4's, then no more pinging

Plugs are new plantinums, I guess you don't gap those kind, could that be it. Wires are fairly new too.

plugs?

What are +4s?

I live in texas, have a 93 sport, and a KKM never had any pinging problems with it, and that includes when my car was overheating (umm yeah rusted freeze plug out of engine) and this has been for the last 4 summers(110 degrees on countless days, we set some record 2 years ago for days over 100 degrees) , so I would think that possibly you're looking at another problem or something weird, did you make sure and tie off the vaccum lines and stick the plug in the correct hose that used to go to the airbox?

jsdean,

There are two hoses right. One is a rubber hose that looks like it goes down to the preheater valve, that one is left open, and the other one is overed in splitloom and has a right angle thing on the end, that one is plugged, is this right. My dad did the install and said he followed the instructions, and I thought I remembered that sounding about right. Is the preheater hose being left open causing the preheater to be left open causing hot exhaust to be taken in? We thought if we left it open it would keep the preheater closed.

you mite want to check your injectors to make shure they are not slightly clogged as well as your fuel filter. the increase of air may be more then you can handle in the trucks current lack of fuel. this could be the problem as well as the pump going bad.

i had the same problem with my '93. i made a heat shield to go around the air cleaner and that helped,
still had to run 93 octane though.my 97 5.0 x has a kkm
with the same setup and that runs great on 87.

yes, that is the correct installation, I bent the unplugged one in half and zip tied it to something, I dunno that that will help out (as opposed to it being open, bending it so it's "kinked" is more like having it closed, I don't have any idea if it makes a difference, that's just how my install ended up. I'm sure given different conditions and all sort of variables, it's possible the heat is causing you pingning, I just know that in incredibly high temps I haven't had any prob., out of curiousity is your air filter on the passenger or driver side of the engine compartment, when I talked to the KKM guy he said mine was funny b/c it's on the passenger next to the battery rather than the driver next to the fluid resevoir, b/c I was just thinking it's very likely for one side of the compartment to be way hotter than the other, this of course could play a big role.

Mine is on the passenger side, which is true of all pre 95 Explorers I think. I tried this weekend to put it on the drivers side because it seems much more open to exterior air. I failed though because of lack of clearance, I finally got a setup to work and couldn't get the hood closed. I may try again next summer when its warm using exhaust tubing instead of 3" PVC pipe. I just wish I new for sure what was making it ping. But it doesn't ping for the first few minutes of a trip so I'm believing thats what is the problem. I'm might try going back to the stock air box for a while to see if that changes any thing. Hopefully I'll be able to figure this out.
