L/S clutch pack qustion

Is there any way to know how many clutch disks are in the 8.8" without opening the cover? rockauto shows two kits, a 22 plate kit USA#16111, and a 18 plate kit USA#16110. and the axle ID tag is LONG gone.

The 22 plate kit is cheaper. Get that, and there should be nothing wrong if you can only fit 18 in there.

The rear end type and ratio information is also in a code on the driver's door identification label. It will be correct assuming nobody has changed out the axle.
