Leak in the front transfer case?

Hey I was fourwheeling a couple weeks ago and I had my truck in 4 low and when I went to turn I heard a loud pop or bang. It still drove just fine and went back into 2 wheel. Ive been driving it everyday for a couple weeks and today I looked underneath and saw that the front transfer case had some liquid coming out of it. Not enough so that it is dripping but its still there and I have never seen it before. Does anybody know anything about this? I tested the 4 wheel drive and it seemed like it was still going in, I dont know about all 4 tires, but it felt like they were all there. Thanks.

What part of the tcase does it appear the fluid is coming from? Or do you mean the front differential?

When turning your wheels in 4lo, a pop and a bang can be considred "normal". In 4Lo, all four wheels want to turn at the same rate, when you corner, the outside wheel wants to go faster. Since the system won't let it, it tries to wind up the axle, the pop and bang is when the pressure is released by the wheel skipping or sliding along the ground. That's why you should never use 4lo on hard surfaces if you have to turn the wheels.

The timing of the leak is probably just a coincidence. Where exactly is the fluid coming from? The shaft seal? The joint between xfer case halves??

Yah I know not to drive in 4 low on a hard surface. Thats bad news. I was in the sand dunes. It looks as if the leak is coming right from where the shaft goes into the case. Thats at least where it looks like it is starting from. Thanks.

I have what looks to be a leak in the front transfer case I think. I think the leak is right where the shaft goes into the case. What do you guys think?

It is possible to get a leak there...there are four different gaskets that could be leaking tranny (red) fluid: the bellhousing/tranny body gasket (too far forward for your observation), the tranny body/extension housing gasket, and the extension housing/transfer case gasket, and then there is the gasket that connects the front and rear of the transfer case itself. Is it a really slow leak or a gusher? Have you cleaned off (not w/ a pressure washer if you have a leak) the areas and then looked to see where it is for sure? Has there been work done on the tranny before where the bolts might not be tight? If it is a pretty severe leak, then you should check the fluid levels of both the tranny and the transfer case to amke sure you aren't running w/o fluid (baaaad).
