I have an 05 Explorer XLT. I've tried everything to stop my sunroof from leaking! I've made up my mind that, since I never use it anyway, I'm gonna permanently seal the damned thing watertight shut! Any recommendations as to the best way to go about this??

Does it leak around the seal or the drain tubes?
I had a leak in my 95 and it ended up being the drain tube at the front driver corner was cracked and brittle.

IMO, these cars are too old to address every single problem to perfection.

I had a leak in this area, and I siliconed both the sunroof and the top of windshield.

Problem gone...if I want fresh air I'll stick my head out the window.

Don't forget to detach power coupling if you go this route.

I'd check the drain tube also. I've been pretty lucky with my sunroof. I've owned my 2005 Eddie B for a little over three years. Looks like the previous owners had garages and took care of it above and beyond regular maintenance which seems to include servicing the sunroof. I've cleaned the drain tubes, lubed the tracks twice and applied some silicon spray to any rubber pieces now that it sits outside. This thread details the procedure.

Oh, it was 100% a detached hose that was supposed to plug up to the front passenger side "tit." I pulled the A pillar, reattached the hose, but upon testing the sunroof with a garden hose running water over the sunroof, not only did the tube I plugged back up come loose again, I started having water come in just abv the rear passenger door. I think I knocked the rear tube loose whenever I put that piece of rectangular wood back in abv the headliner. I tried to tell the fella who installed my sunroof that the passenger front tube was loose, but he just blew out the drains, attached the OEM sunroof I bought, & left. My sunroof motor is very weak, I'm pretty poor right now, & sealing it shut seems the wisest move. Any suggestions are plenty welcome!

Surely I didn't screw anything up with the luggage rack?! It's always, *knock on wood,* seemed fine. I bought it in 2018, it just now has 150,000 miles, & I think it has a decent amount of life left. I'm just sick of my passenger-side headliner getting soaked in the rain. Also, it's got a BRAND NEW windshield, whatever that's worth.

Lastly, the last time it rained, I hastily duct taped a garbage bag over my sunroof. I also parked so the rain would run towards the back. My headliner was far, far dryer, almost completely dry, as opposed to when I've simply thrown a tarp over it. I'm so thankful for this forum that when I get paid the 1st, I becoming an elite Explorer.

Where is the power coupling located, mountaineer2004? And thanks for that advice! I'd have never even thought abt that! But I'm w/you. Considering my sunroof motor is weak, & that I'm pretty poor til I can get back to work at the end of the yr, spending MORE money on that sunroof seems dumb, speaking strictly for me. What kind of silicone did you use?My windshield is brand-new, but I'll probably silicone it on the inside too. Thanks for your input. Very much appreciated!

Seeing as how the motor is really weak, & that I'm pretty poor right now, just siliconing the thing permanently watertight & shut seems like the best option for me. I'm just wondering #1 where the power coupling is that I need to detach to go this route,, & #2 what the best product to seal it with is!

Where is this power coupling that I need to detach located at??? The info would be greatly appreciated.👍

Was just curious, mountaineer2004, what you mean by "detach the power coupling." Would appreciate a response. Thanks

Simply detach the plastic piece in the photo and unplug the connector.

If your headliner is wet from the roof leaking, the problem is absolutely the drain tubes. On mine the front passenger drain tube came loose. When I dropped the headliner it was clear that the tube would pop off again if I didn't use some kind of adhesive. You have to put the tube on the nipple but not push it on all the way BEFORE you put on the adhesive or else you can plug the tube. I used some kind of silicone adhesive sealer stuff to glue the tube back on and haven't had any problems in about a year. The roof still leaks but it just drains out. IMO keeping the tubes clean is an annual maintenance thing.

Look for stuff that's made for outdoor use. Ask at the auto parts store or even home depot.

Okay. I know the piece you're referring to now, but mine's configured a lil differently. My sunroof button is set smack-dab in the middle of the thing, w/two controls for rear heating/cooling vents. And mine's obviously an '05 fully loaded Explorer. I see yaou upgraded a little back in '04 w/the Mercury Mountaineer. What would happen if I didn't, decouple that, I mean??? curious. I'll post a pic of mine after I join the elite after I get paid on the 1st. But I thank ya greatly for the response. Very much so!👍😉 Also, I'll probably need to ask one (two, tops) more questions of ya... If ya don't mind, of course.

^ of course, you're welcome, not a problem...if you're going to go my route and silicone to stop the leak, you want to disconnect the power source as you don't want to accidently raise the sunroof, break the seal, and have your originally leaking problem...you most def will press the open button at least a couple of times accidentally...old habits take a while to break

i'm just happy my Mounty still runs...i don't let little problems like water leaks and oil drips get me down

sunroof area leaking? silicone that **** and move on to the next problem...that's my way
