I recently went off road with a few friends and slammed into a rock while following one of the other vehicles. I could have gone left or right and missed it, but we were doing about 15mph, and t was just there, no time for aything. The first two trucks made the turn no problem having about an inch or two on me. I on the oh the other hand was stopped cold by if. I tried going forward them reverse, o good, then I turned the wheels as I ws backing up and it finaly broke loose. We looked under the truck and it looked fine, but the next day there was a thin line of oil along the seam of the diff. I took the X in and the mecahnic said it was just a slight pull and he could hammer it back or put a new back and silicon seal or gasket to fix it. This was about three weeks ago, well yesteday I was getting something out of the back of the X, and notice I light clean oil spot. I crawled underneath, and sure enough it's leaking right along that same seam.
Does anyone have any ideas? does this mean a new axle? or maybe just a thicker gasket?

Help!!

Did the mechanic do the work? From your message I can't tell whether he did the work or not.

I would think another thick layer of sealant around the diff cover and screws would do the trick. Which could easily be done yourself.

Yeah I had it done by a mechanic and when I went back he wanted to charge me a $100+ because he said he needed to order a back plate because it was warped. He said the guy that owned the truck before me never serviced the diff, and let it go nearly dry. I thought about using the liquid weld, but wasn't sure if it would stick because of the way the diff was leaking.

I tool it to another dealer and he said the first guy was full of it, and that he could stop the leak for $20 + the fluids which came to a neat $60.00. He said if I don't hit any rocks for a few days it will be fine. He took a grinder to it, and took out a small warp, and a ding from the other guy using a hammer trying to straiten out a ding. What happened is I smashed into a rock pretty hard and it caused the diff to leak a little bit. THe first guy charged about $100+ to straighten it out and then put the fluids back in. All I can say is you live you learn.
