I know that one of my front wheel bearings is bad.

From about 20mph up there is the constant whine or growl.

It goes away when turning to the right.

I'm going on what I was taught years ago that this would mean the left bearing is bad.

Is this correct?

Oh yeah it's a 2000 Mounty AWD.

TIA

I think it would depend on if it were inner our outer wheel bearing that has failed. If it were my truck, I would replace the inner and outer bearings on both wheels and be done with it.

That said, what I have done in the past, when it is not obvious which bearing has failed, is lift the front wheels off the ground, and spin the wheel while holding the shock or strut. The vibration from the bearing will transfer from the wheel to the shock and be obvious, even when you cannot hear it.

It's an AWD so your not going to spin the wheel. And there's no inner and outer bearing. You have to replace the entire hub.

It should be the left bearing. Jack that side up and grab the wheel and give it a good shake and you should feel the play.

if it were me, i'd change both right and left. if one's worn out the other is probably not far behind.

On my last one that I changed the other one went in less than a month. So it's a good idea if they are original.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to do both, but my brother did me a 'favor' and ordered one for me.

I'd like to get the correct one changed first.

Did you jack it up and grab the wheel and check for play?

I just changed the drivers side front hub this afternoon.

The noise is gone.
