I think the problem with lifted TTBs isn't the TTB itself, it's the simple fact nearly every liftkit out there made for them leaves a lot to be desired (most screw the steering all to hell, and ALL have way too stiff coils, which is the cause for nearly all the issues already mentioned above).
If you're willing to do a bit of figuring for some different (non-TTB) coils (to get the correct lift height) and possibly some fabrication for the steering linkage, I'd just keep the TTB and run with it (that is, provided you have the D35 axle, and not the D28 under your Ranger).
I wheel the pee out of mine, and it seems to hold up just fine. I've got maybe $600 tied up into the suspension on my BII (which completely goes against the popular belief that you have to dump tons and tons of $$$ into it to get anything from it).
Of course, those F-150 axles would be sweet if you want to go full-width. I don't see that being real practical on something you'll be driving to work everyday.
