Livernois error codes?

:popcorn:Livernois sells cams for a 6.2 Raptor, they don't sell a tune and cannot remote tune your engine with their cams. Only experience I've had with them.
Want to know something ironic? Those cams are likely Comp or Kelford cams. Remember...LMS doesn't actually make anything, they've secured the rights to slap their label onto something you can likely get cheaper directly from the source...just saying...

Clearly a lot to address here. Wow.

So, let me ask a question I'm almost hesitant to do. :)

That tune has been on my Sport since 30k-ish. It now has 72k-ish. I've had no issues with it; however, recently, something has started to happen. When I jump on it, and the RPM's sweep above, say, 4,500rpm, on a full throttle run to redline? It doesn't happen on a gradual sweep to 4,500 rpms. We're talking - on it, full throttle. I see grayish/brown/black smoke coming out the rear end. A pretty hefty cloud, frankly. It's NOT white, or blue. Seems like excess fuel, but not sure. I notice no other drivability issues.

Facts: Since the tune went on, the plugs have been changed twice. No appreciable issues - MAYBE some slight oil on a few but, that's really searching for something. Overall, I'd call it normal/fine. PTU fluid changed twice and the tranny fluid once. Coolant changed once and the brake fluid once now, too. AirRad intake and it's clean. I use 93 octane, top tier fuel, and have since day 1. Overall, it's been well taken care of. I do have the three bar MAP sensor in there, FYI.

I generally run their mid tier tune around town and they programmed in a softer shift feature as the first one was too harsh for my liking. Still more firm than stock.

It was suggested that it may be carbon build up that's starting. That's what I'm seeing coming out the tailpipes when I hit it - that's the suggestion that was made to me.

I don't run this vehicle hard. Once in a while I get on it when pulling out, or to pass; however, 90% of the time I'm not even sure why I have a tune. HAHA.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? Hopefully nothing major. What would you suggest doing to fix carbon build up? I saw some YT videos on the top from that MACOLOKO (sp.?) guy in Chicago.

Thanks!

Your symptoms are not something specific to the Livernois tune. I will say, my interjections on the shop took your post off topic a bit and the conversion grew to what it became. My gripes for them stem mostly from their business practices, bang-for-your-buck, customer service and biggest...lack of versatility (especially for the premium price you are paying).

That being said, as mentioned, your particular issues I am not leaning to being a tune issue. It is beginning to sound (take internet-troubleshooting with a grain of salt) like it may be one of three things:

1) It may, in fact, be the carbon build up on your valves. This is a notorious issue with these ecoboost engines since they are direct injection and have no fuel washing over the valves to help clean. It's one of the reasons the Gen2 Raptor (3.5L ecoboost) went back to port injection in addition to direct injection. Not sure if you have a catch can installed, but that is a device that can help mitigate the carbon build-up. Over time, this build-up can effect performance and will often manifest as a slight misfire and some smoke. Some ways to help alleviate this is to do a seafoam treatment (I've never done this, but I've heard it can be done on a direct injection engine) or by doing a walnut blast after purchasing the intake port vacuum adapter.

2) An injector beginning to go out. This is also not uncommon. If one or more of your injectors is hanging up slightly, it may be dumping more (or even less) fuel than needed and creating that smoke. This will also generate a small misfire as the excess fuel is firing off outside of the normal engine cycles. You would see this on your plugs. This issue, if left unchecked, can eventually become disastrous.

3) You may have a seal going out on one, or both, of your turbos. Also not uncommon on this platform. I had it happen to my front turbo, but I obviously beat my ride pretty hard. That isn't always required to have a seal go out, however. One way to check, if you're able, is to remove the downpipes and see how wet your turbine side of the turbo is. The compressor side can also be wet, but not always. In my case the compressor side was 100% dry and the turbine side was soaked in oil. And after removing the turbo, the exhaust manifold was dry. That left the source of the leak right at the turbo. This issue will usually manifest by blowing a cloud of smoke when either idling or when letting off the throttle after a WOT pull.

It's tough to diagnose issues over the internet, but some of these issues may be present in your case. Still hard to say, but keep us updated. Thanks.

Walking out the door to an appointment - more later; but, thanks! I did call my dealer and they are going to do a "GDI Flush" Monday. Need to read what all that is, but - any insight? Thanks again!

Sounds a bit like some sort of seafoam-type treatment

I bet those stock turbos are at their threshold. Its not too hard to see if they are seeping oil. I have the Livernois tune as that was the way to go when I got my X. I would go with a different tuner today. That being said, I still run the Livernois tune with a 3 bar map and it's been good to me. They are the "Apple" of tuning - locked into their environment which usually involves resold parts with no expertise. The tuner is a crappy TFT touchscreen. The 1986 Buick Riveria used better technology. They have been pretty irrelevant in the Ecoboost game for a while now.

I am at the dealer now having the BG induction service performed. They checked the turbos and they are not leaking - according to them, anyway. The BG service sounds like it may have lift. Very interesting....

Takes 90min. and is $150. See how it goes...

Interesting. Let us know how it goes.

Only drove 5miles home, but I certainly noticed a smoother idle and far more responsive acceleration. I'll have it out on the highway tomorrow and will give it a few Italian Tune-up's. ;)

I Have Explorer 2017 Sport I Following In You Web Very Good Articles, I Have A Question, What Tuning Do You Recommend From Your Own Experience I Always See Livernois Very Simple Compared To Others

There are a number of options. I personally use AJP, but he can be hard to reach sometimes and that turns some ppl off. GearHead is a close second and the owner, Matt Robinson, is well-respected in the ecoboost scene and knows what he is doing. Torrie from Unleashed also has a good track record. I'd personally go with GearHead if you are asking but whatever you do....stay far, far away that clown show called Livernois. Dont give them any of your money...

How did the BG flush go? Any long term difference?
Highly recommend it. Just be sure you get that exact service. There was confusion, at my dealership, at first. Just go to BG's website and find a retailer near you that does it.

I'm up almost 2mpg. It idles better at cold starts and the acceleration is much smoother. I plan to do it every 20-30k.
