I've seen two basic types of locking lug nuts, the type that uses a standard key in the end and the type that uses a special adapter on your lug wrench. Does anyone have any experience / recommendations as to which type or brand to get?

Thanks,

I have used the one's that have a special adapter that fits the lug wrench. I did not like them at all. It was kind of a pain to torque down the lug with that adapter there. I don't use locks on any of my stuff now. Besides, if there stolen, I'll upgrade. Sure it's a pain, but that tells you how much I hated the adapter. Anyway that's my .02 worth.

I agree with Rob. Gosh those adapters SUCK! LOL All I know is I used them on an old set of wheels I had. They eventually got stripped then to top it off I lost the adapter! So I sold the truck. :D

We have locking lug nuts and have to problem using them. There are two styles that I've seen.. one style has a key looking thing that goes in the center of the nut.. This style does suck.. We got the kind that connects around the outside of the lock nut and fits just fine.. I have no problem using the torque wrench on it. The only place I could find this style of locknut was at Discount Tire.. none of the normal auto places had it..

I have used them quite a bit in the past and have a set on mine now. I like the set that have the rounded lug with the 'flower-pedal' design inside the lug instead of the slotted keys. I don't know what degree of security it provides cause if a thief wants your stuff, they will find a way to get it. But, I haven't had any stolen so far. The newest lugs(flower-pedal design) came with the American Racing wheels I bought and seem to do fine.

Best locking nuts by far are McGard (I think this is how it is spelled). I have to park my truck in Chicago's worst neighborhoods (projects). There has been a couple times where I came outside and somebodies car is left on blocks. Got the McGard 3 years ago and they have not rusted yet. Their great.

Thank-you everyone for your replies. I appreciate the info.

Alan
