Cobra Brakes INSTALLED!....pics inside!..video to come soon.

as I have eluded to in previous posts, and in my signature for some time:

COBRA BRAKES!!

I have already figured the rest of it out....including a way to bolt them up to my spindle (thank goodness for the bean counters in the Ford Engineering Department)

Updates to come SOON!

Do I hear a "How To" type write-up coming? I'd subscribe:thumbsup:

...for those that DON'T realize it, I'm doing this on my `92 2WD Explorer.

So far the parts list includes:

1966 (or equiv.) Ford Mustang Drum Brake Hub. I just happened to stumble across the fact that this application used the same bearings as the X. With THAT information, I was able to determine that the 1st Gen Mustang with Drum Brakes had the same spindle profile as the 1st Gen X....THIS WAS A HUGE help when it comes to parts availability.

New Inner Bearings, #A6
New Outer Bearings, #A2
New Wheel Seal, #19221
1/2 - 20, .625 Knurl Wheel Studs, 10 req'd.

All that needs to be done NOW, is I have to cut the 'ears' off the spindle, then have the area machined flat to accept the adapter I am going to make/have made.

More pics and updates to come soon...

Ryan

I would take it a 4WD X would not fit these?

I dunno about fitment to a 4WD....

In the process of doing this, I will take a wheel off of my wife's X, and see how it does...

This brake is 13", and requires a MINIMUM 17" wheel

I am running 18" Saleen's....so it's not an issue for me..

Ryan

Hey Ryan;

Good to meet you today at NAPA. Those lugs I purchased were not the correct ones afterall. The Jeep CJ-7 was supposed to be 1/2x20 0.625 knurl also, but apparently either I was sold the wrong ones, or this jeep is not stock.

Dennis

Good luck Ryan, I hope it works well for you. I like my bigger brakes, except that I wish the pads were larger(pad life). Regards,

Quadzilla-EFI.....it was good to meet another board member......

My wife and I have met quite a few of the local board members. Most of them recoginize me in my White X....

Made some more headway on the swap today...thanks to the lugnuts the counter guy @ NAPA gave me....which were BTW from a HEEP....

Ryan

...got A LOT done today...

Check out the pics:

Stock Brakes, un-modified spindle.

Caliper slid into place, to check clearances....

Now all I need to do is have the spindle machined flat to allow an adapter to be fabricated.....I'm almost 1/2 done!

Ryan

p.s. Is this in the wrong forum? I've done TONS of mods and posted them here...and have ALWAYS gotten tons of hits/responses.....but this time around, I haven't gotten much compared to what I have done in the past..

Just for comparison's sake:

STOCK Brakes in an 18" Wheel:

COBRA Brakes in an 18" Wheel

I like how the disc is pushed out, towards the spokes of the wheel, putting on display more-so than the stock set-up.

...more progress...

I dropped everything off at my machinists place today...

I have had work done by them in the past, great guys...one of the guys there has a BII with a D35 swapped in from an Explorer, so they know the suspension & brake system pretty good!

Ryan

btw, is ANYONE following this? or am I just talking to myself here?

We are, but there are not many 1st gen 2WD guys here, so unless this can be made to fit a 4WD it only benefits you & a few others. The entire front setup is different in 2WD/4WD X's. You also setup yours as more of a sport truck. Not many 1st gens doing that. As well as running 18's. Again not may doing that.

Props to you on doing it though. It's a great mod!

While the 1st Gen 2WD is different than the 4WD, the basic mods are the same.

It will require the spindle to be modified in the same fashion......

I will make it for the 4WD 1st gen next....but if I get no interest, I won't waste my time.

Ryan

I would think there would be plenty of interest in the D35 TTB 4x4 front cobra setup for sure

I'm watching Ryan, I agree though that the number of people who would do that is few. I've had a number of people to ask me how to add the bigger brakes to a 95-01 2WD Explorer, and that's a whole new project.

410....The caliper set-up on the D35, and the 2WD explorer is identicle. So the modification on the spindle area is the same....the hub adapter portion will be interesting to figure out....I have a couple ideas....I just need some parts to play with, but my wifes X is her (our) daily driver, so I can't exactly tear it apart, and cut it up....

CDW...The 2WD set-up on the 91-94 X is the SAME as was used on the BII, and Rangers for a number of years.....

I understand the 1st Gen 2WD X is pretty rare....

You think the guys over @ TRS, RPS, or Bii.org would be interested in this?

Ryan

That's a good idea compared to the majority of 4x4's here. The street Rangers are more likely to be using larger wheels and lowered etc.

I'm watching Ryan

I didn't realize that the spindle is basiclly the same, I would be very interested in a 4X4 version of this thread...

Keep up the good work, there are plenty of us watching.

Chris.

The mounting of the caliper is all the same. Just like in the 95-01's the 4WD rotor is different. A driven hub is needed to work with the spindle, I'm sure Ryan has something in mind from what he said before.
