'01,'02, '04 Sport Tracs,
I have a renewed appreciation for my ’02 Sport Trac, not that I needed it. I bought it 14 months ago with 63,850 miles. It now has 73,300. All I’ve done to it is add a trailer hitch, replace the semi-functioning aftermarket radio with a factory unit, replace the front rotors and pads, battery, and change the oil. Other than a light film of dust, the engine compartment is as clean, leak-free, and seepage-free as the day it left the factory. The underside is just as clean. It runs and drives like a new one. 15 mpg on short local trips, even in winter, 19 mpg on highway trips.

I’ve become semi-obsessed with replacing the 94 Explorer that was my daily driver before I bought the ST. We’ve kept the Ex as a spare vehicle and so my wife has 4x4 in the winter. It has numerous issues -the worst being, the trans leaks like a screen door and it gets 10-12 mpg around town in the winter.

Yesterday I went to look at another ST to replace the Ex. ’01 Job 2, 4x4, 154,000 miles. Seller bought it from a friend/co-worker a couple of months ago to help the friend out. Seller is not a car guy at all. The ST only gets 15 mpg, and he has a 60 round trip to work. He has a car that gets 35 mpg, so the Trac needs to go.

The engine runs quiet like it should. No excessive oil/grease, or signs of leaks/seeps, on the engine. Ran smooth, but could probably benefit from plugs, wires, filters. Most obvious mechanical needs are brakes and an alignment, both needed ASAP. Seller said previous owner put some new parts in the front end, but obviously didn’t get it aligned. Different shocks could be in order. Tires are Destination A/Ts with about ½ tread – just about what I want to run for the way it would get used. But my goodness, night and day difference in the way it feels compared to mine!!

Cosmetically, it’s a disaster. Seller hit a deer at 35 mph with the right front corner and cracked the front bumper cover, so that needs repaired or replaced. Both headlights and corner lights are cracked/broken. That stuff is not a huge deal. But the hood looks like it was repainted with a roller, as does the raised portion above the rear driver’s side wheelwell. The right front fender has a lot of body putty. The rear bumper cover is cracked and needs replaced. The bumper looks to be ok. Tailgate is a mess – rough putty job covered with more “roller paint”. Interior needs a lot of attention – mostly a lot of little things. I already have a nicer full length console I could swap in it. Local pick n pull has lots of 4 dr Explorers, but no STs. The lone ‘03 Sport they have has an earlier front clip on it, so parts would likely have to be new.

I should walk away, but it’s pretty well-optioned, and mine has zero options unless you count 4x4 and a/c. This one has 4.10 limited slip, moonroof, deluxe floor console, overhead console, power driver’s seat (cloth), Sport Trac carpet floor mats, Ford bug deflector, tilt wheel, and keyless entry – but no cruise control! The previous owner has the bed cover, which I said has to be part of the deal. Seller texted me after I got home to say it’s just a matter of picking it up. PO lives 15 minutes from me. Seller is about an hour away.

Seller is more motivated than I am. He was asking $4000, but called me when I was ½ way home to say he’d take $3350, recognizing the deer damage makes it worth less than he paid for it. He texted me 2 or 3 times last night and once so far today to see if I’m interested. I’d have $5000 to $6000 in it by the time I got everything fixed (without surprises) – which is about what it would be worth around here. I can turn a wrench, but the paint and body work, particularly the paint, is beyond me. I could find an Explorer that would serve our needs for half that, and the wife would probably be happier with an Ex. I’d go for another Sport Trac, and a project seems interesting (today).

I'm in the same situation. Looking for a daily driver to replace the ST since we have a baby on the way and the current lift and 35s don't seem too friendly to that. I am considering purchasing a certain members ST (you know who you are if you're seeing this, I haven't forgotten, and I am serious). It's just hard to find such a universally utilitarian vehicle. I keep looking at sedans and find myself drawn to wagons and hatchbacks. Am I really a wagon kind of guy? Blech, I think I need another ST.

Do you? It sounds like you want it.:D

Well, I should walk away, but I just can't bring myself to make a decision. There's a used car lot 2 hours away that has a nice looking, well optioned, Sport Trac for $5500. That would make more sense.

The seller gave up driving the one I looked at to work because of poor gas mileage, but uses it to haul his young kids around town because it's easier getting them in and out of the Sport Trac than his economy car.

Just trying to "help"!

Hugh, you're having a baby, congrats man!!! Life totally changes but only for the better. For a family vehicles the 1st Gen ST is probably one of the best all around vehicle (well a midsize quadcab pick up) I really like Carol's 2013 Toyata Tacoma dcsb Baja T/X.

Thanks. We're really excited. I want to pay cash or I'd be looking at a 2nd gen ST or Tacoma.

i love some wagons and hatchbacks! my subie legacy is the perfect vehicle for the rainy season, and saves us tons in gas over driving the trac or the JK. we get the nimbleness of a sedan and can still carry two dogs in the back. we even run this thing up to the mountains in if its just me and the gf on a last minute snowboard or snow hike day. its also really nice to have when you live in a major metropolitan area where my track wont fit into many parking spots or garages.

An LL Bean Subaru is on the short list, two of them in fact.

I just never thought I'd consider a wagon. But when I start looking at used cars for sell under $8k, the only sedan making the list is the Accord (had one in college). When I narrowed it down, I had a couple STs, two BMW 540 wagons, the Subies, a couple Volvo V70s, a few Focus wagons or hatchbacks and a supercrew F150. I'm not sure why this happened but I'm fighting the idea less each day.

I still can't look away from a ST, though. They fill lots of needs.

Just know if you go to a minivan, there seems to be no going back!

Back on the original topic, I'm buying the Trac, and and I'm holding everybody on this forum partly responsible! The knowledge and helpfulness of everybody here takes away a lot of the risk of a new purchase/project.

Anyway, the engine/trans/transfer case seem to be in good working order. The cosmetics can be dealt with over time, and there's something to be said for having a truck that's a little rough around the edges. I'm too concerned about protecting my '02. Won't have to worry about the '01 getting dinged a little. I took pics Friday, but I'll wait til I actually have it to post them. May have to start a registry for this one.

I suspect you'll get your monies worth. Looking forward to the update.

I just hope my wife likes driving it next winter. She's only been in my current ST once. No way she's driving that one!

I'll get a hitch on it before long and pretty much leave it hooked to my trailer for the summer. I haul my atv to prep a softball field at least twice a week. Last year it was a pain hooking up to the trailer every other day, often in a rush, and then having to back the trailer between all the cars in the driveway to park it later. This truck will get parked in front of the trailer anyway. I'll screw the jack down to take the weight off the truck, but that sure beats hooking up and unhooking so often, especially since the hitch on the trailer doesn't work as smooth as it should.

Well, just in case I needed confirmation that buying the 2nd Trac was the right thing at the right time, the '94 Explorer "retired" itself today. My wife drove it this morning, and the fan completely self destructed, resulting in the Ex overheating when she got stuck in traffic on the freeway. My father-in-law got it to a mechanic who discovered the problem and gave us a quote of $227, I think, to replace the fan and clutch. I said we aren't spending any $$ on it. When I picked it up, he said not fixing it was the wise move as the engine has the smell of one that's been severely overheated. (In my wife's defense, the temp gauge isn't working - a fact I just discovered this eve.) The fan has no blades at all, not even a stub!! Fortunately, the radiator wasn't damaged at all. The mechanic didn't even charge us for looking at it.

I have one last job for the Ex before it gets hauled off. There's a tree in the front yard that needs trimmed. I'll use the Ex to make sure the limbs fall the right direction, and if they hit the Ex, no big deal.

It's mine!

The bed cover (not shown) is a full 1 piece fiberglass unit! The previous owner still had it and I didn't see it until I took possession of the truck. I was expecting a factory cover or a vinyl cover. Sooo glad I insisted it be part of the deal!

Not a bad looking Trac, good thing you were already looking at a replacement rig when the Ex's fan grenaded.

This is the good side. If you look close you can see the rough paint in front of the rear wheel opening. Otherwise this side is in pretty good shape.

Regarding the Explorer - God is good! I don't really believe in happenstance or coincidences for the most part, at least in my life. Too many things have worked out like that - perfect timing, or bad things that could have been much, much worse, breakdowns that occurred in the driveway at home, etc. And that's just the car related stuff.

Amen! It's awesome when you see His plan come together when you didn't even realize there was one in motion.

It certainly is!

I took the truck out for a spin this evening. It flat out hauls!!! I'm much more impressed with it than I was when I test drove it Friday.

However, as I check it out closer now that it's home, I'm not real sure what I have. The truck has a build date of 12/00 by the door sticker (4/12/00 by the vehicle summary report) making the truck a Job 1. But the engine is clearly a Job 2. The oil fill neck is on the passenger side and the PCV valve is behind the driver's side valve cover. The engine looks exactly like the one in my '02. Maybe the engine doesn't really have 155,000 miles on it. There are also options shown on the summary report that I see no evidence of on the truck now - most notably, cruise control and the audiophile sound system. It has a Kenwood head unit in it now, but I don't see the extra speakers or amp that were part of the audiophile option. ????

Being that it's a very early model 2001 I would check the vin number for options for that vin. The motor and door/s were probably replaced at one time.

I used the VIN from the title which matches the door sticker to pull up the vehicle summary report. The build dates on the door and summary report for my '02 don't match either, but the options shown for the '02 seem to match the truck. Obviously the engine in the '01 isn't the original. I'm more than fine with having a Job 2 engine in a Job 1 truck as long as everything works, which seems to be the case.

On closer inspection in good light, the truck does have cruise control, but the buttons are missing from the steering wheel!? Everything under the hood is still there and hooked up.

Got the 1st "ouch" moment today. I dropped it off at Midas and told them to do whatever it takes to get the front end in shape. Mgr just called with an estimate. It needs almost everything except inner tie rods. $2000 give or take $100. I could do some or most of the work myself, but for the 1st time in my life I don't have to, and this needs to be done right, and before the wife needs to drive it. Besides, it's still too cold to tackle a project this big outside.
