I'm doing a brake job on my '93 4x4, the axles are sloppy on both wheels when the rotors are off. Is there a bearing or something behind the the rotor, something besides the normal wheel bearings that should be aligning that axle into the hub? There is also a little scoring inside the auto hub near the top edge, two thin lines that don't look like they were machined in originally. I haven't had any problems with the hubs, I just wanted to check with someone else.
thanks.

The axle is generally somewhat loose. There is a needle bearing inside the spindle that it rides on. I would expect to hear noise while in 4wd if this was shot.

Which direction is it "sloppy"? The end of the axleshaft is supported by the spindle bearing that nitro71 mentioned and the hub. Obviously, when you have the hub off to do the brakes, the axle can't be supported by the hub, and the end of the axleshaft normally has some freedom to move up/down/left/right until you get the hub installed.
