I've been trying to figure out why my truck is vibrating badly and making a strange noise. My transmission was dropped last Friday to replace the rear main seal and as soon as I drove it home, it would vibrate in gear at low rpms(below 800). The shop told me to wait till Friday because the transmission mount has to "settle in again" well I'm afraid to drive it till then. Can someone please help?

I posted this in the stock Explorer forum but haven't gotten any replies on my last three posts.

i have never heard of a trans mount doing that. if the "correct" mount was used, then there should not be an issue. it didn't do it from the factory. if an incorrect/too tall, or improperly installed mount, then it is (possible), a vibration due to metal contact.

Update

I took it back to the shop, and after 3 visits: First they found the rear hanger wasn't on the exhaust so they put it back on. It started vibrating and making that sound again shortly after driving it back home. I went back and the third time they took apart the entire exhaust system and re-torqued everything, they also cleaned the rubber parts on the hangers. The issue is mostly gone now. They tell me that removing the exhaust threw something off and made the truck vibrate since it had never been dropped since it was new. The sound is completely gone in Drive and barely noticable in Reverse but I can live with that. I'm going to order new rubber mounts for the hangers soon. I wasn't charged for any of the additional work, only the original price I paid for the rear main seal

For future reference, if you have this problem after you remove/re-install your exhaust:

1) Retorque everything
2) Clean the hanger mounts(rubber mounts)
3) You might have to get new rubber mounts

Hopefully this'll help someone else as I couldn't really find any info on here.
